17 R4, battery bulge issue, worst support

Couple years back, I had a battery bulge issue for my Alienware 17 R4 that was bought in November 2017. Warranty expired February 2019. I had it replaced by Alienware support back then (January 2020). They charged me with full battery price back then. Now am facing the issue again with my replaced battery. It has started to swollen now. These last two years I had bare minimal usage for my Alienware as I have been using my office laptop the most and not even played a single game. Last time, the support team told me that I would have done something wrong for this battery swollen issue but this time I am pretty sure that they are wrong and Alienware have the worst battery / worst QC for the battery pack.

This PC Mag article has a good description of bulge causes and how to avoid them, though in many cases that is impossible. But since the system is out of warranty and the battery is 2 years old, there will probably be no warranty or replacement for the 2 year old battery. Also this Dell support page has many FAQ for battery issues.

Hi @vaishvin welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

Support for Alienware 17 R4 includes guidance for Handling swollen Lithium-ion batteries

Laptops with no battery are designed to function as Desktop on ac adapter power.

A swollen Lithium-ion battery should be very carefully removed so that there is no damage to system and/or you. If battery starts leaking it will destroy everything it touches and is a potential fire hazard, take battery to a safe place away from human habitation and arrange for safe disposal.

Lithium-ion battery can swell and its lifetime chemistry has got nothing to do with user. Dell Battery warranty is only good for first year, and not included in second year Dell warranty (or thereafter). Dell Laptop Battery - Frequently Asked Questions | Dell US

@Crimson, I understand Dell doesn't provide good extended warranty support. But my concern was how come Dell's Li-ion battery pack can swell within 2 years time. This is the 2nd time am having issue with. I have used other laptops before and even now am currently using my office laptop with Li-ion battery which doesn't have this battery swollen issue.

All am concerned was about their QC for this specific model.

Hi @vaishvin thank you for your concern about swollen battery issues. Dell has a number of battery suppliers and the technical question why should there be any swollen battery is complex. Dell Quality Control requirements are managed by battery suppliers, who get regular Dell audits for all models, not just your specific model. Despite battery suppliers best endeavours, there are batteries that become swollen. Dell has changed the design of laptops to give good access to the battery, so that users can visually check on battery condition.
