Avamar loses connection with vcenter and results in all snaphot backup failing with No VM error

Hello All,

I am using Avamar to take snapshot backups using Avamar proxy server. I have an issue where the Avamar MCS loses connection with the vcenter and all backups fail with no vm. Restarting the vcenter connection service fixes the issue for sometime but it occurs again.

Only on doing a complete recycle of mcs the issue goes away for few days but again re-occurs most likely when my vmware ops team perform some work on vcenter server. This issue occurs once a week and severely affects my SLA. I have checked with EMC, and they say that Mcs loses threads with vcenter and needs a restart. I have 5 Avamar servers, only this server is having issues. I need a permanent fix, if someone can help.

Avamar version - 6.1.2-47

I cannot upgrade my Avamar to v7 as it is not compatible with my vblock matrix.

On the mcs logs also I cannot see anything but the logs are missing.

Recent issue occured on Aug 4th once and again on 15

Restart MCS services solves a problem permanently. Thank you guys!

You will need to work with support on this.

I have the same issue. Have you got any solution?

You need to recycle your mcs services in avamar.

Best workaround is to recycle mcs whenever your vcenter services are restarted or rebooted.

We had similar connection issues on Avamar 6.1 - any time vCenter was upgraded or modified, we had similar issues.  We had limited success with closing vCenter connections in the Avamar GUI, but only restarting MCS prevented the "No VM" backup failures.  This issue improved greatly upon upgrading to 7.0 and we haven't seen the issue on 7.1.  I understand why you cannot upgrade to 7.0, but if other users have a similar issue, upgrading might be a fix for them.

Hi Ian

We have had the same issue however with version 7.1.  Is there any way to monitor the vCenter connection for connectivity?  I would expect this to be an SNMP trap type event if Avamar cannot connect to vCenter.  I have looked but did not see any monitoring possibilities.  We have had the vCenter connection issue a couple of times resulting in hundreds of backup failures.

Any Ideas?  If not is there a way to talk to the developers to see if a Trap can be added to monitor the connection?

Thank you

Dan Eckman

If you haven't done so, you can submit a Product Enhancement Request, a PER.  This is a formal request to EMC Engineering, which has a trackable number associated with it.  Your EMC BRS team can assist with the creation and notify you as Engineering reviews the request.

Let us know if that helps!
