Server upgrade to v5.0SP2 process

Hi Guys,

Have any of you been through the process of upgrading an Avamar server to v5.0SP2?

Out client set is at v5.0SP2 and Server is 4.1.2-33. We have 2 grids of 10 data nodes and are about 75% full. We are fully supported so this would be an upgrade via an EMC SR.

What are the benefits of having the server code upgraded and how long do you think the operation takes? Will we have to schedule downtime for the upgrade or can it be done within the day? Has anyone noticed any improvement to GC performance? Also does anyone know the end-of-life date or have a link to them for the Avamar server versions?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks,

Dave.

Hello

We upgraded to SP2 some weeks ago and it took a v.v. long time (practically the working day) even though we only got 1 grid and for data nodes and our utilization is just 62.8%... If I remember correctly the utilization is directly proportional as it effect the server reboot time.

We also did the upgrade during daytime to have minimal impact on the nightly backup windows

I recommend you to ask and download all required packages (Avamar and RHEL) on forehand to the Utility Node as just this part can take hours (depending on your connection speed as well as EMC upload speed).

I noticed afterwards that Avamar has reverted back to doing 2 checkpoints per day again (validates the one in the morning) when in v5 it was just one… Also the sched.sh utility we had to upgrade afterwards separately.

Best of luck

Hi,

Avamar server upgrades should be performed exclusively by the EMC Avamar Support team.

The Avamar support team is familiar with the common issues and challenges involved in the upgrade process and have developed many best practices to help ensure a smooth upgrade.

Upgrade Procedure:

To request an upgrade of an Avamar server open an EMC support service request through Powerlink or by calling EMC Dispatch.

This SR will be passed to a member of a specialised upgrade team.

A member of the specialised upgrade team will then contact you to request additional information, to discuss the upgrade procedure and to arrange a suitable date to schedule the upgrade.

Thanks.

Hi

Sorry if it wasn't clear enough from my original post the upgrade was done by EMC Support Team following Sean's mentioned request through Powerlink.

cheers

Thanks for your input guys.

This upgrade will of course be handled by EMC, I just wanted to get an idea of the process first hand before I start the SR with EMC.

Thanks for your time,

Dave.
