alignment offset going from server 2003 to server 2008

Here is the scenario:

I am currently reconfiguring a 3 node SQL cluster in Windows 2003 with new LUNs.   The consensus is that you will get better performance if you set the alignment offset after creating the LUNs and presenting them to the server.   In a few months the servers will be upgraded/rebuilt to Windows 2008 but the LUNs will remain the same.   Now in 2008 you do not need to change the alignment offset since it does it automatically.

Here is the question.    If the alignment offset was created on the LUN when it was presented to Windows 2003, what happens when it is then presented to Windows 2008 after the upgrade?  Can you change the offset back?  Should I just not use the offset in 2003 knowing it will be Windows 2008 in a few months?

Any ideas, papers, links would be great.

Thanks,

Rip

I would recommend that you diskpart the W2003 lun's no matter what.   Yes you dont need to do anything in w2008 anymore since it automatically offsets the first 1M on a new lun.

setting the offset is a distructive process so you wont be able to change it later without a full backup and restore.

I have seen W2003 lun's represented to a W2008 box with no problems so i think you will be fine.

Upgrade to windows 2008 will not touch partitions so like Kenn said set it now to 1024 offset

diskpart > create partition primary align=1024

Changing the off-set after you install the file-system and load data is a good way to clean the disk of any data.

New partitions on Windows Server 2008 are likely to be aligned. Yet partitions created on earlier versions of Windows and become associated with Windows Server 2008 maintain the properties under which they were created. That is, in the absence of partition alignment being explicitly performed, these partitions are not aligned.
