Order not found?

I placed an order through Dell Outlet yesterday and immediately received an email including a Dell purchase ID.  When I attempt to check the order status using the purchase ID, no order is found.  I have tried calling and chatting with customer support and the several people I spoke with are unable to find anything associated with that purchase ID.  They concluded the order did not go through.  Is this right?  Why would I get a confirmation email if the order didn't go through?
