DD2500 shelf upgrade

Hello, a customer had purchased a ES30 shelf (to be added on to the head unit). The DD head does not have any SAS controller module installed. I understood that in order for the system to recognize the SAS controller, one needs to power off the DD and boot it up. Only then will we be able to to successfully add the new shelf to the system.

Question is:-

Customers DD is connected to a Dlm ( Disk Library for Mainframe) and there is replication ongoing to 2 different sites from the production DD.

Prior to powering off the DD2500 (source) to perform the upgrade, is there anything that needs/required to be done on the Dlm?

We will have to upgrade the DD2500 shelf on the other 2 sites (targets) on a different schedule. Is there any special steps to it as well?

I was trying to search support.emc.com for clues on this but couldn't find any.

Appreciate any inputs to this query.

Hi Siraj,

As long as you are just adding storage to the DD2500 and not changing the number of file systems, there are no DLm concerns. You can shut the DD2500 down to add the storage, bring it back up, expand the DD's file system and be good.

On the DD side, shutting down the source will interrupt replication as one would expect but the systems will resync once the source comes back up and replication will catch up. The same would be true on a destination DD.

You will need to add a SAS SLIC to the DD2500 for external storage and you are correct that the system needs to be shut down add the SLIC and restarted to add the drivers to recognize the SLIC and the attached storage. Note that the SAS SLIC needs to be installed in slot 3, Slots 0.1 and 2 are reserved for VTL or Ethernet SLIC's.

Thank you very much. The activity was successfully carried out today and the customer did an offline to the drives in the DLm prior to powering off the DD2500. All was good.
