When moving from DPA v5 to v6 you need to do a migration, you cannot do an in-place upgrade. DPA v6 requires two new servers (an application server and a datastore server) - either Windows or Linux (Solaris is not supported as a platform for the DPA Server anymore but you can migrate from a v5.8 Solaris server to a Windows/Linux v6 server).
Once you have installed DPA v6 on the new servers, you must install the migration tool which will migrate your data from v5 to v6. Here are two links to some useful information on the migration process:
This video gives a good overview of the process. It was created for DPA 6.1.x and the latest release is DPA v6.2.1 so some things have changed but it still provides a good overview of the process: https://support.emc.com/media54972_Data_Protection_Advisor_(DPA)_-_Migration_from_DPA_V5_to_DPA_V6.mp4?language=en_US
The following documentation provides details on performing the migration: https://support.emc.com/docu58578_Data-Protection-Advisor-6.2-SP1-Migrator-Technical-Notes.pdf?language=en_US
