OME sends shutdown command instead of a restart command when performing system update

Often when i try to update servers using the System Update in OME, OME will initiate a shutdown instead of a restart on the server it's trying to update. This happens if I don't uncheck "After update, if required, reboot the device."

I know some updates require a full system shutdown, like the power supply firmware updates. The system is suppose to shutdown and then automatically come back up after 15 minutes or so. The device never comes back up, even if I let it sit for 2+ hours.

Most of the servers have OMSA 8.1.0, 7.4.0, or 7.2.0

The last two servers that had this happen were a R620, and a R720, and both were running OMSA 7.2.0.

We're using OME 2.0.1.2222, however, we had this issue on OME 1.2

Because of this issue, I'm forced to manually update servers, defeating the purpose of even having OME.

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

OME should be sending restart command and not shut down command. It would be good if you can open support ticket and we can investigate further.

I'm assuming you have checked the status on the server and it was not waiting on any user inputs (pressing any key to resume) booting up process

Were you pushing a power supply firmware update by chance?  I have horrible results with that update.  It often fails and then the server just turns off.

Hi Thanks for your query. As already mentioned in the thread, this could be happening due to PSU firmware. We have issues where server won't come up after PSU update.

Are you facing this issue with any other firmware? If so, can you please provide more details on the same?

Thanks,

Arun

I was pushing out the power supply firmware when I ran the last update. Some of the servers restarted without any trouble but the two I mentioned did not. The servers shut down, meaning fully powered off, and did not turn back on. Those two servers also failed to install any updates.

It seems like it is most likely due to the power supply update. I'll need to test it on some less critical servers.

Check the DRAC and look at the Lifecycle Log.  It will show you if there was an error while attempting to update the power supply firmware.

Just tried updating another R720 through OME.

Here's what is in the logs:

2015-09-23T16:41:39-0500 - Updating Delta AC750W Platinum PSU(PSU PN: 9PXCV), 09.2B.80, A00.

2015-09-23T16:41:50-0500 - Unable to update Delta AC750W Platinum PSU(PSU PN: 9PXCV), 09.2B.80, A00.

2015-09-23T16:41:57-0500 - System is turning off.

After that, I had to manually turn the system on. I made sure the restart after update option was unchecked.

Very annoying that this problem still hasn't been resolved!

Output confirms this is more of Dell update package issue.

Will notify the corresponding team about this issue.

Thanks,

Arun

This may be unrelated but I've had power supply updates fail if I don't power down and drain the flea power first.
