2720 Overheating

Greetings.  I have a brand new 2720 AIO and I have some overheating and shutdown issues.  I believe its reaching its thermal safety limit and shutting down, but, according to Speed Fan it is not a consistant number.  Im nearly positive its on the NVidia 750 card that the shutdown is taking place.  All drivers are updated.  I can reproduce this 100% by running a game, like Skyrim for example, at maximum settings.  I get a good frame rate, but the fan kicks on and after a minute, it shuts down.  Here is my question:

Is it a typical design for a computer to hit a thermal limit instead of a performance limit?  I've never had this issue before..

And...

Are other people having this issue with a 2720 AIO?

Currently, Dell is sending me a replacement, but it has been a long process and if the new one does this, I want to be sure this is a typical behavior of the machine and a flaw in the design.

Thanks!

I recieved a new 2720 yesterday and, after updating it with all drivers, bios, and 8.1 updates ran extensive tests to see if I could overheat it.  I was not able to get it to shutdown.  I was expecting it was a design issues, but it appears to have been a mechanical.  So, if you are having an issue with the 2720 shutting down.. get a new one.

Hello PDubulous,

Let’s check the log files to find out if it is shutting down due to overheating or if there is possibly another issue. You can check the log files here:

Head out to the Event Viewer under the Control Panel and search under Administrative Tools. Open Windows Logs>System and search for any events marked Error. Check for any errors that are occurring around the time of the shutdown. If you find any then please post that section of the log here. If you can’t find anything then please save and upload the log somewhere and provide a link. I can then review it for you.

Please use the following to save the logs from your event viewer:

1. start>control panel>administrative tools>event viewer
2. windows logs>system
3. Right click on the event and save selected event(s)

How to upload the logs to the forum:

1. Click on your name next to the globe
2. There should be a tab labeled Files
3. Look for Add File and choose  browse
4. Browse over to the location to where you saved the log(s)
5. Choose the log(s) and click Add File

Thanks

There is really not much doubt that its a heat issue in my mind, and while I have a new 2720 on the way, I am not very confident its going to fix the issue.  I think it may be a design flaw rather than a mechanical flaw.  We will see though.  I tried shutting off the NVidia 750m card and running a game from the Intel card.  It last a bit longer, but did not get nearly the frame rate of the NVidia Card.  I think its the overall cooling on the whole system.  When the machine is being taxed, you can here the NVidia card working overtime to try an cool it down.  So what I am really trying to find out is whether I have a fan issue or whether the system is poorly designed to support the hardware it incorporates.
