Dell Dimension 4500 power-on bug

My 4500 only powers on with great difficulty. The button on front bezel usually does nothing when pressed - the switch assembly itself has been replaced at least 4 times with a new one which works fine for a short while. Finally the 2 "hot" wires on the switch were located and when shorted usually allow power on. However this is not 100% of the time. Sometimes the power cord must be disconnected and possibly also re-seat the plug from the motherboard. Various combinations of USB connections have also been tried - minimum # seems to work the best.

Are there any suggestions for permanently fixing the bug ? Thanx.

Hi,

I would request you to send the service tag of the system via private message so that we can check the system specifications, warranty details and also the troubleshooting steps performed so that we don't repeat the steps performed.

Hoping this helps.

Regards,

There is no point in service tag for an 12 to 14 year old Windows 98 Win2000 based Dell.  It is not under warranty.  Power supply and or caps on the motherboard are likely causing the issue.

This is a unit that is not worth fixing.
