Dell XPS 8700-3312, GeForce GTX 745, 1440 monitor support

I recently read two posts stating success with GTX 745 GPU supporting 2560x1440 @ 60hz. This was accomplished from the HDMI port on the GPU. I am a non-gamer and need a new monitor for everyday computing. I would welcome comments from anyone who has used a computer with this GPU supporting this resolution. I need to make a decision soon between 1080 and 1440 and welcome firsthand input on success stories and general impressions. I am not interested in upgrading the GTX 745 at this time and moving the weak link further down the chain. System is XPS 8700-3312, i7 4790, 16gb memory, GeForce GTX 745.

AFAIK nvidia drivers were broken for > 165 Mhz pixelclock over HDMI making HDMI 1.4  being not possible due to the driver not supporting it. The non support came because the gpu's overheat and die so NVIDIA stopped supporting this.

Nvidia added support for HDMI 1.4 in their 319.23 drivers but but this was limited to  256 Bit Kepler based graphics cards

With many newer versions than 295.33 the display just goes blank as if it didn't get signal.

Aka Dell U2711 display over HDMI 1.4    2560x1440 @ 60 Hz

Dell U2715H over HDMI (to Nvidia GTX 745), and maximum I get is 2048x1152, while the monitor supports 2560x1140.

3840x2160@31/30/25/24 Hz
1920x1080@60Hz
1280x720@60Hz

I'm sure that 1080 works fine and I'm not sure that 2560x1440 @ 60hz works at all ever.  Also Doubt you will see anywhere in the documentation that  HDMI 2560x1440 @ 41hz or 60hz works at all.

You would need to UPGRADE Video to GTX 750 TI imho.

I've also seen reference to (2K) Refresh Rate: 144 Hz

60-120-144Hz refresh selection

I would look for GUARANTEED WQHD 2560 x 1440 monitor @ 144 Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time.

ASUS claims the PG278Q is WQHD G-Sync™ Monitor works.

ASUS ROG PG278Q Black 27" Gaming Monitor 2560X1440 , 144Hz 1ms(GTG), WQHD G-SYNC 3D Monitor

I don't know of a Dell Monitor with these specs.

I would question ASUS about any system requirements.

They seem to be saying DisplayPort 1.2 port to enable NVIDIA® G-SYNC™.

Note: G-SYNC features require an NVIDIA® GeForce GTX650Ti BOOST GPU or higher.

I can't remember what the Dell flavored GTX 745 has for graphics connections.

If it has display port, use that, otherwise use the DVI port. I tend to avoid using HDMI if I have the choice.

You didn't ask :) but here are my opinions on monitors and resolution.

Monitors is up to 24 inch, 1080p is OK.  Above 24 inch, 1080p it starts to look rough.

For 27 or 30 inch monitors, I like higher resolution than 1080p.

Another option:

My preference for a 24 inch "business class" monitor is 1920x1200.  the extra 120 pixels is worth it vs 1920x1080.

I'd still use DVI or Displayport vs HDMI.

Hello Speedstep and thank you for your reply. I recently read a similar thread with ronin777 and Kiko514 commenting that they were having positive results with the GTX 745 outputted to U2515H monitor from their GTX745 GPU's. ronin777 confirmed 2560x1440 @ 60hz from the computer and the monitor. I need another monitor and have been  chasing this question over the last two weeks. I bought this computer, (Dell XPS 8700-3312, Win7 Pro 64, i7 4790, 16gb system ram, GeForce GTX 745) last August and have been running it through a Dell E173FP monitor from 2004. When I researched this computer, Dell claimed that it was high performance rig, gaming ready etc. (and best thing since sliced bread) and now I find that the GPU is marginal at best. So now I'm trying to decide between 1080 and 1440 resolutions for my new monitor. Obviously I would prefer the higher resolution, but not at the cost and frustration of endless upgrading of system components. I just want something that works with my easy, everyday computing (non-gamer). I haven't delved into educating myself on the technical aspects of video such as ">165 Mhz pixelclock" so I ask that you forgive my ignorance. It is a shame that Dell would put a marginal vcard into a "high performance computer" and are still doing so with the XPS 8900. There is a lot of conflicting information on this subject between Dell, Nvidia, and Dell Support Forum and I'm probably not the only Dell customer confused.

Thanks DAN-H, I agree and would use DP exclusively given the choice. However Dell in their infinite wisdom gives me a card without DP and , here again in their infinite wisdom, do not include a DVI-D Dual Link on most of their better monitors. I would be nice if someone would yank the chain of the major vendors and get more standardization going. But that's been a pipe dream since electronics were invented. I'll probably have to settle for a 1080 display or maybe check some wqhd displays from other manufacturers that are more customer friendly than Dell. Or maybe, like moving to Windows 10, I'll just wait for the majority of the dust to settle before looking for a monitor that's easier on the eyes. Thanks again.

Not sure if this is the right forum but the graphics card you've been talking about relates to a question I have.  What is the most current driver version for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 card?  I just purchased an XPS 9000 - the existing version is 10.18.13.5385 (8/7/2015).  I attempted to do a driver update by clicking 'update driver' under the device manager but upon doing so, the computer started acting up so I rolled back to the version I just posted...not sure if the wrong update was installed.  I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Thanks DAN-H. I'll look at those displays, though I'll probably stay below 27".

Hi YANKEES2009. I'm not sure of the numbers that you show on the driver version. According to the "Nvidia Geforce Experience" program that came on my machine it is showing the latest driver for the GTX 745 as being "361.91". Hope this helps.

Thank you BONNED 2013 for the response. I will have to see if I have that program as well when I get home tonight. The version number I mentioned was found when I went to the device manager --> right click on graphics card, properties --> driver tab. If you do that on your machine, do you still see the 361.91 you mention? I'm on a Dell XPS 9000 using Windows 10.  I'm thinking the update I attempted is not fully compatible with Windows 10, thus I had to revert back. I just didn't know what the newest/driver to use would be. Thanks!

In device manager it shows my driver as 10.18.13.5906. Not sure about the different numbers in device manager vs Nvidia GeForce Experience nor about compatibility issues with Win10.
