Dimension 4700 memory upgrade
I installed 2-1gb memory cards to my existing 512mb memory but my computer only shows 1.49gb of ram.

That my in fact be correct. Where are you looking to read the ram amount?
Look in the bios first and make sure that it correctly states the 2.5 gig amount.
Then see THIS about how ram is used in a 32 bit Operating system

I'm looking at view system information under my computer. How do I look in the bios?

power on the system. At the big Dell splash screen press the F2 key. you will use the keybord when in the bios to navigate around.

Thank you so much. The bios showed that the first slot was empty. I check it and found the card wasn't seated properly.
