Error codes 0f00 0667 & 0f00 0648

I can't get through to Optiplex tech support, so I'm asking the Forum:

After I had a blue screen of death, a local computer tech tested my Optiplex using Dell's Smart Drive short test. He ran 2 tests. Results:

1st test:       0f00 0667 Msg Disk - 0

2nd test:     0f00 0648 Target drive abort command

Anyone know what these mean?

Thanks.

Always include the PC model number and version of Windows in your posts.

Sounds like your hard drive may have failed. Does the system boot?

I have an Optiplex 740, and I'm running Windows XP.

And yes, it can boot. I'm using it now.

The HDD may not be dead yet but it sounds as though it is terminally ill. Back up your important files while you can, decide what new drive you want to install and plan the funeral.

@Jeff - You are sooo cold/cruel!

@Susanpl - But I agree. Back up all your personal files (don't forget email address book and Favorites list) and replace the hard drive. You could always install the old drive as a secondary drive after the new one is fully installed. in case you forget to back something up on external media.

Here's Dell's tutorial for manually installing XP. You'll need your Dell XP Reinstallation CD. You can download all the latest hardware drivers from support.dell.com and burn them on a CD for easy installation on the new hard drive. They can be downloaded on any PC, but don't use Dell's Download Manager -it's a mess- use the "Browser" option.

The key thing about reinstalling XP is that things must be done in correct order, eg. XP followed by:

Desktop System Software (System Utilities, if required for this model)

Chipset driver

Video driver

Audio driver

Network driver

etc.

Thank you, all. I need to call in a tech to help me.

Do you know where I can find an online forum that Dell responds to?

I heard there's one on Facebook; would prefer one off Facebook.
