GTX 280 - XPS 630 - PCIe 8x Performance?
Hello,
I have recently purchased an XPS 630 before I knew about the PCIe 8x problem. I have also ordered an Nvidia GTX 280 card to use with this system.
My question is, how much is performance going to be effected due to the PCIe bus only running half the speed it should be?
I have noticed a few users with the above setup, any input would be appreciated.
Also, have all the other problems been resolved with this system, apart from the LED blinking problem? (Im hoping Dell may send me a system with an updated IO board to solve that).
Kind Regards,
MatexShip

Just an update.
I cancelled my original 630 order and returned my GTX 280.
I have now ordered a new 630 with an Nvidia 9800 GX2, which dell are supplying with a 750i mobo. (Originally DELL UK did not offer the GX2 option)
I now strongly believe that all previous buyers who request it should be provided with a 750i mobo. It's only fair.
Thanks,

This may well be true as the GX2 has two GPUs and needs the better board to function properly.

The XPS 630 is not shipping with the 750i chipset.
Concerning the two XPS 630s that are showing the 750i chipset in CPU-Z. The chipset ID is the same between the 650i and 750i. One of the differences between the two is the 750i has an extra pci-e to pci-e bridge. The GeForce 9800 GX2 video card has its own pci-e to pci-e bridge. So, CPU-Z reads the chipset ID and checks to see if the bridge ID is present. It mistakenly reads the one on the GeForce 9800 GX2 video card and in summary, calls the PC chipset 750i. CPU-ID has the information and we have started communications with them to get their software corrected.

Agree.
The difference between 650i and 750i is the nForce200 chip, which is a PCIe-to-PCIe bridge. 750i chipset adds this chip for more lanes and PCIe 2.0 support. The same chip exists on the GX2 card. CPU-Z must have mistaken the GX2's chip (on a 650i board) with the 750i's.
With all of the QA and R&D cost of developing a new board, I don't, and never, believe DELL will offer a different board on this system. After all, this system is supposed to be "affordable". Putting a newer board in will cost DELL a great deal in R&D and support, also affect their margin unless they increase the selling price, which will affect customers.

Well, as expected! My 630 arrived yesterday and the PCI-E lanes are only x8. This is my only problem sooo far with the 630! The machine is lightning fast! I still have a serious problem with the misrepresentation by DELLand their lack of acknowledgement.I even provided them with documented proof on the misrepresentation and Customer Care could care less.... I have an open ticket and just waiting for a Cust. Care Manager to call me back.

No surprise here. :)
Just decide if you are otherwise happy with the machine and whether the PCIx16/x8 slots matter to you. If they do, simply return it.
Customer service will not be able to do anything for you as they have no other option available to them. There is no benefit trying to argue with them; you will just annoy them and frustrate yourself.

CPU-Z is reporting false things. This has been verified.

There have been talks that this chipset when used in other (non-Dell) boards has a BIOS option to allocate all 16 channels to the first PCIe slot (rather than split 8/8 between the two slots).
Is this something Dell can (and will) implement, or is a physical limitation on the Dell-specific version of this board that can not be fixed with software?
Thanks,
Bill

Glacious01,
X16 PCIe will not be possible with a Dell 630i as Dell only provided 8 phsical lanes to the primary GPU slot on the motherboard.
