Graphic Card Upgrade Dell Studio XPS 435MT

Model: Studio XPS 435MT
Processor : Intel Core i7
Memory: 8 GB
OS: 64 bit Windows
Case: Stock (have never done a case switch but would be willing)

Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB2
Power-supply: 550w (honestly the first upgrade I did)

I have squeezed a lot of gaming out of this thing and it has served me very well. I am looking to do a basic graphics card upgrade but want to stay under $300.00, I just don't want to go too big or too hot for the system (or pointlessly powerful but I am kind of okay with that if it happens).

I am also willing to upgrade the ram but again at 8gb I am not sure if I would get a big benefit out of going to 16gb but at the end of the day part of this is a learning experience and the install would still be fun.

Also I am willing to be told its not worth it, if it would be better to buy a new system then I may actually consider doing that but figured why not ask as you folks seem pretty GD knowledgeable.

EPS 12V 2.91 compliance means you should be able to use most cards if the supply is really up to spec.

I am just checking now out of paranoia as apparently I no longer understand graphics cards like I did 7 years ago (who would have figured)

Would this card work. I only ask as I need 2 monitor support and this seems like it has it with a decent review an all.

I believe the 435 has Dual wide video slot so yes that would work fine.

The 7770 has 1X  6 pin PCI-E Power connector on the back that you need to install.

Hi Findlayh,

Dell Studio XPS 435MT uses the Intel X58 Chipset based motherboard. Dell has tested XPS 435MT with following video cards :

  • nVidia GeForce 9800GT, GT220, GTS240, GTX 260
  • ATi Radeon HD 3450, 3650, 4350, 4850

Dell Studio XPS 435MT system has a PCI Express x16 (rev 2.0) slot to accommodate a video card upgrade. Though, Dell has not tested this system with modern cards, these video card are compatible and based on technical specifications they should work.

As per your budget, my personal recommendation would be to go for GTX 760 as it retails at around 250$ and gives a run for money for other video cards in same price range. You may refer to article Here for a comparison between various video cards. Also, you may refer to review of GTX 760 Here

Hope this helps.

A Radeon 7750 would be a big boost and not too expensive.

A Radeon 7770 would be even better but the power supply would need to be EPS12V and 550 is questionable.

Would a AMD Radeon HD 7870 be out of the question?

Hi Findlayh,

8 GB memory is sufficient for a machine dedicated for gaming. However, if  you're running a number of resource-heavy applications simultaneously especially image or video processing, CAD, or 3D modelling (For example Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects) then you will surely be benefited by 16GB of RAM. Having more than 8GB also comes in handy if you make extensive use of virtualization tools such as Microsoft Hyper-V or VMWare Workstaton, especially if you run multiple operating systems simultaneously.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

There are better cards than the 7770 but they are more expensive.:emotion-3:

If you have 8 its a waste of money to add more IMHO Other than for Bragging Rights.

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC)

Maximum Memory: 24GB

Slots: 6

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS.

I hope its ok to resurredct this, as this is exactly the upgrade I'm planning on doing.

You mention the gtx 760 which i was considering. But as i understand it, it requires 500 watts, and am I right in thinking the power supply on the xps 435MT is 350 watts?

My geforce 220 is blowing up and causing crashes. Uncertain if this is because of the card itself or the power supply. Perhaps it would be wisest to replace both?

Geforce 220 does not use Aux PCI-E power.

Low end Dell power supplies are 375W when they have the aux PCI-E power connection. This is the same PSU that the Precision 380 uses and works with cards that only have 1 6 pin PCI-E connector just fine.

So just to clarify then. are you saying that the aux psu can't be at fault because my card doesn't use it, so the hardware has prbably gone nuts then?

And I'll be ok with the gtx 760 because it does use it? Is there one already installed in the pc (I couldn't spot anything obvious) or will i need to buy one?

I've got an Dell Studio XPS 435MT and upgraded it with a nVidia GTX 960 and it is working great!! All running on the stock PSU of 360W (including 9 Gb RAM, 2 HDDs, 1 SSD, 1 USB 3.0 Controller).

The PC came with a Radeon 4850 but the GPU died after a couple of years and I replaced it with a GTX 550 TI (116w) which was fine at the time, but now with an MSI GTX 960 (120w) I can play today's games with decent grapics and frame rates. Passmark GPU score around 5600. I am very happy and hope others can use this information.
