McAfee will not uninstall

Download and install the MacAfee Uninstaller program http://downloads.digitaltrends.com/System+and+utilities/OS+management/Uninstall+utilities/195895/McAfee+Uninstaller.html

then I would recommend  to download (for free) and install and run CCleaner  http://www.ccleaner.com/

Thanks, I'll try Ccleaner & that other McAfee tool and see what they can do.

I already the McAfee provided utility three times. Checked its log which says all the componenets are gone.  I ran Registry Mechanic which didn't help.  I begining to suspect McAfee has gone but Vista's Security Centre is the problem.

Is there a way to remove McAfee from the recovery drive too?

Let us know how you get on or what you had to do cos I am going to be uninstalling it from my XPS 420 this weekend to put Kaspersky on.

Will do MMTWRX.  Kapersky is a good product too.  I went to a site which tests all these products and Kapersky & Nod 32 (part of Smart security) have their highest certification.

So far no luck with McAfee, but I think it has gone but Security Centre doesn't realise it.  There's no way of knowing for sure as security products are hidden to keep hackers at bay.

I'm being haunted by the vengeful ghost of McAfee!!!  Or it's done a turncoat and joined the league of viruses.

 

Has anyone managed to exorcise this wilful program?

McA is still showing up in Security Centre but Dell SC recognises only Smart Security.  Thanks for that!  I guess it must be an issue with Vista.  It probably happened when I BSoD.   I might try reloading it later, or turn Vista's own Fire wall on & off.  Maybe that will force it to update.

Im just in the middle of testing, Dell help seemed really A1. Its going to take another 6 or 7 hours though, then call them back.

I never seem to notice the inbox but I got your PM & replied.

That error when on BIOS screen, does it say "Error Occured"?  I get those all the time, it doen't mean that its broken, just that at some point it made an error.  Once I had that on both ports.  You can clear that error flag in the Intel Matrix Manager Manager using a r-clk menu.

I use Raid 0 but since you use Raid 1, then its not a problem with using raid 0 as I thought before.

I had a notification in the system tray a couple of days after i got it saying 1 of the hdd was corrupt and was being repaired. it took it some time but it did it and has been ok for a couple of weeks. Then as i shut down today i got a message balloon from top left corner of screen saying a drive had failed. It shut down so far but the power was still on. so had to hard reset. when i booted up it stayed on the loading page, so i had to hard reset again. I started again but on start up it said a drive had failed. The notification in the system tray had a an error with a green and a red hdd. I couldnt open the matrix controller. So I just rang support and got transfered to USA. The guy seem to know what the problem was so we will have to see. I bet Dell shift thousands of these units a day so 3 or 4 similar issues in a month on this forum may not be a true representation of the scale of the problem. Im not going to get to excited about it just yet :smileywink:

Problem solved with the McAfee problem.  :smileyhappy:  I'll post it below when I get my facts straight.

Were going a bit off topic...  but I got an email from Dell tech support.  After getting my name wrong, they gave me the so called "correct resolution" as they call it, which I already told them I tried, dozens of times! 

They say " If you find that one of the hard drives is failing, I would suggest you to try repairing by going to Start-Programs-IntelR Matrix Storage Manager and click the left mouse button on drive with fault message, then advance and reset it to normal"  :smileyindifferent:

The truth is, it does not repair the problem.  It only resets the error flag.  Also its not a L-clk operation but a R-clk context menu operation. 

I'll make a dedicated post about this later.  The answer won't be found in a Antivirus topic.

Glad youve sorted the McAfee issue.

I couldnt open the Intel Matrix Storage Control. I had a balloon in the sys tray next to the HDD icon >click here to open the Matrix Control< when I clicked on it it started to open but then froze. I ended up rebooting and trying from the start button but still the same. I looked in the device manager and it looked ok there, no yellow exclamation marks and it says it is working correctly. I just cant open the software to do anything.

Anyway I PM'd you a bit more info on this.

Here's how I solved the McAfee problem.  Kudos goes to Craigie @ Vista Forums.

• Create a restore point (just in case).
• Type services.msc in the search box & click on Services icon.
• Scroll down to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).
• Now click on the "Pause" button. Leave that window open and click
  Computer.
• Navigate to %systemroot%\Windows\System32\wbem (where
  %systemroot% is the drive where Vista is installed).
• Delete the Repository
  folder.
• Now go back to the WMI service window you left open and restart the service.
  • Ignore complaints from Security Centre
• This will rebuild the Repository folder & its contents.
• When the Repository folder is restored, Reboot the computer.
• Confirm the new Internet Security program is registered in Security Centre (Control Panel).

That's it!
