Optiplex 745 Graphics Card

Hi all, just joined so go easy, just acquired a optiplex 745 small form, and want to uprade the graphics can anyone recommend a cheapish one, i have seen a Dell ATi Rage Ultra 128 Pro 16MB AGP Video Graphics Card VGA GPU Half Height, but have no idea on whether its better than the on board or not, or if there's better, im on a 15 inch monitor at the moment but looking to go bigger when funds available, also does the on board resolution which is set at 1024 x 768 and wont go any higher, set to the 15 inch monitor, all drivers are up to date and running, win 7, 2.5gb ram, 3.4 x 2 processor.

The 745 is PCI Express and the SFF does not support 75W cards.

ASUS SILENT HD5450 is the ONLY card I would recommend.

If you have USFF there is NO card whatsoever because it doesn't have slots.  I recommend the TOWER versions because they have quite a lot more choices for cards.

The 745 came in different chassis sizes. You chose the smallest one with the smallest power supply so you limited yourself. The following are Dell validated Low Profile PCI-e 16X video cards for this chassis -

XX347 ATI Radeon HD2400 Pro, 256MB, DVI-I, TV Out
YP477 ATI Radeon HD2400 Pro, 256MB, DVI-I, TV Out
CP309 ATI Radeon HD2400 XT, 256MB, DMS-59, TV Out
XX355 ATI Radeon HD2400 XT, 256MB, DMS-59, TV Out

Original Answer Still Applies.

It does not have 2 slots for the video card on any model. The Tower model can take a Single slot card as long as its not longer than 7.5 inches.

Some take to dremel tools and cutting pieces off cards and the hard drive bay and taping it back in due to the lack of space.

At least i think i have, the chassis is 9.4cm wide x 30.35 deep x 31.5 high, if this helps clarify what it is.

Apologies, i have realised i have the Desktop DT version and has got 2 slots on the back, so the original question still applies, very sorry for my mistake.

I ran the HD 6450 for quite a long time in the Optiplex 745 SFF and it worked really well.  Most all low profile cards come with the full size bracket attached and you will have to change over to the low profile bracket.  Most come with these brackets.

Could i get a HD 6450 with VGA and DVI, and take off the plate and install it with the ribbon cable loose until i get a bigger monitor with a DVI input.

The plate is not the issue. Its PHYSICAL.

The card no matter what size MUST NOT BE 2 slots wide because it wont go into the slot.

The hard drive carrier on the SFF and Desktop cannot be thick as it wont fit.  If it sticks up even a tiny bit you cant even put the cover back on. The Slot itself says 25W max.  The 5450 uses 19W max

Most HD 6450's come with VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs.  They come with two low profile brackets.  One for DVI and HDMI and one for VGA.  The VGA is attached to the PCB by a ribbon cable.  I have always installed both. You just have to use two slots at the back of the case and two is all you have anyway. The VGA is just positioned below the other.  This HERE is the exact card that I used in the Optiplex 745. It does have a fan so if you're interest in complete silence, you can get one with a heatsink only.  I preferred the fan for better cooling since it is in such a compact place and the computer was used for some gaming.  As you can see in the pictures, it comes with both low profile brackets.
