Optiplex 745 MT & Core 2 Duo E5800

Hi,
I have someone who has offered me an Intel Core 2 Duo E5800 but I'm not sure if this is compatible with the 745 MT. I have read some conflicting information online, which doesn't help. Apparently someone has it working, but several others are adamant it doesn't work. Which one is it?

Edit:

Looks like Q6600 and Q6700 is max based on chipset.

Figured out E5800 is a Dual Core not a Core 2 duo.

This is 45nm and not listed as compatible with 965 chipset.

Always install the latest bios MSDOS or XP is recommended to update bios.

Excellent! Thanks very much SpeedStep, always helpful. This will be a huge step up from my current CPU.

Hi,

The E8300/400/500/600 ('Woolfdale') are 45nM process CPUs with 1333MHz bus and do not work in a 745 - it only supports 65nM process CPUs with a maximum 1066MHz bus.

The Pentium E5800 is also Woolfdale series and doesn't work.

The successor to the 745 - the Optiplex 755 -  supports Woolfdale 1333MHz CPUs like the E8500.

If you want to upgrade a 745 your best bet is the Core 2 Quad CPU range like the Q6600/700 which can be had for not too much.

Official Spec says  Intel® Core™ 2 Duo  1066MHz FSB Socket T with
Dual Core technology XD, EM64T, 2MB and up to 4MB L2  cache, EIST and VT (E6000 series)

INTEL 965 chipset I think is the limiting factor.

This means Q6600 (SLACR) and Q6700 (SLACQ) seem to be max based on chipset.

Hi PowerPodge,

When you say the 755, do you mean all form factors. I do have one, but SFF.

Hi,

All 755 form factors take the E8300/400/500/600 series.

There is a restriction is for the quad core Q9550 and similar - these take too much power for the USFF from memory.

I just tried it in the 745 MT; No such luck, orange light, black screen. A shame too as I really wanted it in that one. And that's another example of why one should scrutinize information online. Two people swore they had it working in the 745 MT!

As per the 755? Works perfectly. Quite a noticeable improvement too. So I am very happy with that!

I'm a little disappointed to hear that the 745 can only go as high as 2.4 GHz, though it is a quad core. my current one is 2.2 GHz - I cannot recall the model, but it has two cores. Will the four cores compensate, as well as the larger cache? Looking at some comparisons online it doesn't seem much better than the E5800. The Q6700 only a bit bigger than the Q6600. I suppose it doesn't matter for my purposes; I am not into gaming.

Just an aside: Is it true that Dell's range of Optiplex can't be overclocked? Thanks again for your time everyone, very much appreciated as always.

Regards
