Optiplex 760 MT ( direct3D will not work / video card upgrade)

Hello I need help fixing the ability to enable Direct3D on my system, or help with a video card upgrade. My pc will not even run screen savers and the only game i'm able to play is peggle! I can play videos on it, but the quality is terrible and the display driver will only allow me to run at 1024 x 768

There seems to be much debate on the best compatible graphics card for the dell optiplex 760 MT. I am trying to install the BEST card that will be supported by stock components. I do not wish to upgrade the PSU or MOBO or CPU. I just need to know which card is going to give me the best power without any other changes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have:

Case: Dell Optiplex 760 MT (mini-tower/ Large form factor)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8Ghz

Motherboard : [Dell : 0M858N] Intel 4 Series

RAM: 8GB (4x2GB)

PSU: 305W

Video Card: ATi Radeon 9200

OS: Windows 7 Proffessional sp1 64bit

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought an EVGA GTX 750Ti 2GB GDDR5 (superclocked), and unfortunately it DOES NOT FIT. The only PCI slot it could be plugged into is the top slot. The card would face upward, and the bracket is a double, so it will not fit at the top slot. Is there a way to order a single slot pci bracket, because it would fit if it were single.

A lot of people have suggested the HD7750, but most of those are twice as expensive, but half as good as the GTX750 ti. Also, not many are available. I'm not interested.

I'm Considering buying the MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0x16 HDCP... since this is a single slot, would it be an ideal upgrade? Link below:

Radeon 9200 is going backwards.  You must have at LEAST 128 megs of VIDEO ram and the 9200 has 32 megs of VIDEO ram.

ASUS EAH6450 fits in ALL Models All Sizes EXCEPT USFF.

ASUS Silent cards fit in all models with X16 video slot. Meaning it doesnt fit USFF because USFF has Zero Slots. These cards fit and work in every dell I have ever tried.

They fit into every Dell Except USFF.

Regulatory Model (Mini-Tower): DCSM
Regulatory Model (Desktop): DCNE
Regulatory Model (Small Form Factor): DCCY
Regulatory Model (Ultra Small Form Factor): DCTR

Thanks, but is this the BEST card that is compatible and supported? I was hoping there was a GDDR5 card available, as I will be doing slightly more ambitious gaming. Will this card support the equivalent to 7th generation console games, and 720p HD video? I don't need anything better than that.

The issue with your size is the power supply and only 1 slot wide.

There are people that hacked together something that works.

Mini tower 760 can take Corsair CS750M power supply.

Very Few cards are only 1 slot wide however.

SINGLE SLOT WIDE IS REQUIRED.  If its FAT then cannot be longer than 8 inches and may need Tin Shears to cut half the bracket off.

RE: Optiplex 760 MT ( direct3D will not work / video card upgrade)

Thank you for the tremendous effort you put into your response, but most of this information does not help me.

As you can tell from my original post, I am aware of the issues with getting a card to fit.

One of the cards (galaxytech) you suggested is over 9inches long, so I don't think I will be using that one.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think the power supply will be an issue. The most powerful cards that FIT (GTX 750 Ti) only use 60w.

As I have said before, I found an MSI GTX 750 Ti that I'm interested in, but my issue is not only if it will fit (a reviewer has confirmed that it fits my model), but also if it will work without issues. One reviewer reported that they could not get it to work... having something to do with the bios, but maybe that is a seperate issue not related to the card.

Again. I have a MT (Mid Tower), not SFF (small form factor)

The galaxy tech card is not more than 1 slot wide. Its not easy to find however.

You arent looking at the pictures.

Did you say that the fan and shroud would need to be removed on the galaxytech card? You're right,  unfortunately it is almost impossible to find.

The Asus card you suggested looks like a perfect fit,  but it's a little more expensive than the MSI and also only 1GB gddr5,  whereas the MSI and galaxytech are 2gb...

... Could you comment on the MSI GTX 750 Ti 2GB GDDR5 single pci slot card that I linked in the original post,  please?

RE: Optiplex 760 MT ( direct3D will not work / video card upgrade)

I ordered and Installed the MSI GTX 750 Ti 2GB GDDR5 single pci slot card from newegg. It fits, and it works fine. So far I've only tested a few light games, but I'm getting 60fps on the highest settings possible for Unreal Tournament 2004 and Castle Crashers.

The system doesn't seem stressed at all, yet. I actually only have a 255w PSU, and there's even an extra HDD I have setup from another pc. I just recieved a CPU (E8400) I purchased from starmicroinc.net for only $10. I will update after I install it. I probably should have got the E8600 for $25, though.
