PSU for Studio XPS 8100

My old Studio XPS 8100 has started to show signs of wear and tear after years of loyal service. Unfortuenatly, the power supply is starting to roar when put under stress, especially while playing games.

I would like to replace the powersupply, and I was wondering if there's a possibility to replace it with Dell parts or with parts supplied by a third party.

Can anyone point me in a direction?

Edo

Should work fine. It may require sliding out the optical drive to get it in. Studio XPS 8100 is NOT a Dimension 8100. An Antec Phantom is

5.9"(W) x 7.2"(D) x 3.4"(H)

The reason is that you have to slide it forward and under the metal lip to get it in and sometimes the CD is in the way while you do it.  You may also have to remove the ram and then put it back. Its a tight fit.

The TR2 600W is 5.9(W)x3.4(H)x5.5(L)

  • TX650W Dimension: 5.9"(W) x 3.4"(H) X 6.3"(L)

The Corsair Builder Series CX500 should be fine.

It has five SATA connectors.

24 pin EPS 12V certified power supply's work.

$29 ATX power supplies will fail and burn up everything in the case in the process.

Yes, the power supply can be replaced.

Generic  ATX power supply units can be installed, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector and with, or without the On/off switch.

Note: A power supply with four SATA power connectors, is needed.

Also, look for power supplies of no longer than 5.9 inches in length.

The Corsair you linked was exactly along the lines of my thinking. There'll be no compatebility issues or anything when I drop one of those in?

Except the Corsair is 6.3" in length, not 5.9"

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll open my system when I get home tonight and take a look for the required connections and such. I've been checking on the Corsair PSU's and there's a set with smaller dimensions available which should fit more easily, but they have fewer connections. I was actually looking at getting the Corsair CMPSU-500CX (http://www.corsair.com/en/builder-series-cx500).

The contents of my pc currently is 2 HD's, 1 3D-card and a DVD-player aside from the motherboard and 2 external HD's. Given the age of the computer, I'm not considering upgrading it anymore, and it is currently being powered by a 300 Watt-PSU, which is low as the 3D card actually requires 350 I believe. I'll need to check the required connections.

I received my new PSU yesterday. It's running after a smooth installation. No issues at all fitting it in. Thanks for the assistance!
