Power Supply Compatability

No, the GX1 power supply is a Dell proprietary unit and is not compatible, the 4550 requires an standard ATX without the on/off switch.

Dimension 4550 systems can use most standard generic ATX power supply with either a 20-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, that has no power on/off switch.

Because the 4550 has a closed back panel, if a PSU with the on/off switch is installed, you would need to modify [cut a hole] the back panel for it.

Firstly, thanks to shesagordie for taking the time to respond.

Secondly, it turns out that I made a mistake in my original post. The "new" power supply I would like to use actually comes from an Optiflex GX150 (service tag ) not an Optiflex GX1 (). The power supply has a red tab type switch in the back with 2 selector positions. 1) 115  2) 230. This selector switch is accessible via a cutout in the back of case. The cutout has an odd shape with 6 sides (sort of) with some edges rounded and others straight. The DOM of this box is 11/5/01.

The box I want to put the power supply into is a 4550 based on what the service tag is telling me (). This box has a same shaped cutout on the back as the GX150. The current power supply in the 4550 also has the 115/230 switch accessible thru this cutout.The date of manufacture of this machine is 12/6/02.

The power supplies look very similar and seem to have the same type of connectors coming from them. What is different is the labels on the power supplies. It seems as if the max output of the GX150 power supply is 200W and the max output of the current power supply (which is the dead one) in the 4550 is 250W. I am somewhat concerned if there would be some type of hazard in using the 200W supply in place of the 250.

Also, does anyone know if the selector tab should be at 155 or 230?

For the Dimension 4550, you need a 250w PSU, not a 200w.

Not certain what 'selector tab should be at 155 or 230?' means, but if it refers to the red voltage selector on the power supply, if the PC is being used in the US/Canada, then, it should be set to 115v.

You need to remove the all the service tags, as posting them are against Dell's Terms of Service and the post could be deleted.
