Q: can Optiplex 990 (with i7-2600 and 265W PSU) run a 750Ti?

Dear people,

Recently I acquired a refurbished DELL Optiplex 990 with 8GB RAM and with i7-2600 and I am very satisfied with this system but I would like to run some games on high(ish) definitions.

Therefore I would like to upgrade the system with an GTX 750 Ti graphical card (for example: Asus STRIX NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti).

My question is:
can the systems original 265W PSU supply enough power for the upgrade? Or should I upgrade the PSU as well to have a stable operation?

These 750Ti's are originally designed for systems with low power supplies (they only draw power from the PCI-e slot - max 75W - and have NO auxiliary pins). The Optiplex 990s can be shipped with an ATI graphics card (with a draw of ~68W from PCI-e), furthermore the specs document from 990 states that the PCI-e slot on the motherboard is rated with the standard 75W.

On the other hand I feel that this upgrade could really stretch the limit of the system, add some more HDDs / RAM and/or insert some USB devices and the PSU might not be able to take it.

Modell: Optiplex 990
PSU: dell  d3d1c
Power: 230V AC
PC: i7-2600, 2 DIMM DDR3 RAM (8GB total),1 HDD (500GB)

While Idle the machine will post but playing games the machine will reboot and crash due to demands for more power than the unit can provide.  Standard Corsair CS750M fits fine in the Mini Tower.

There aren't any upgrades for the smaller models.  I don't believe the Booster 450W power units are available anymore that fit into the 5.25 inch optical drive bay.

Thank you.

I do have to point out that the whole deal with the 750Ti is that it doesn't require any additional auxiliary power cables, only the 75W it draws from the motherboard. You linking in this Booster X5 leads me to believe I might have not made this entirely clear.

I think I'll have to forgo the purchase until I find a better deal for a new PSU (then again, I'll not be limited to the 750Ti, I might go to some higher-end GPUs)

Best of luck to You,
Kolos

There are people with 305W towers that put the 750TI in and have issues in 1 week or less and have dead power supply in 1 month.

Dell uses 20 Amps on the 5v rail and 14 amps on the 3.3v rail aka combined 150W on those rails.  150W + 75W Video + 45 CPU = 270W and thats not counting what the Ram and Hard drive etc use.

Idle the card works fine but when you work it the power isn't enough.

I use a specific not longer than 8.6 inch GTX 570
