Studio XPS 435t / 9000 i7 running Win7 x64. crashing due to high temps

After multiple crashes with and without BSOD, monitoring is showing high temps (CPU, Core, other) to be responsible.  RAM, CPU, HDD, Video testing all pass under hi-stress conditions.  I planned to upgrade fans but note that even with cover off, temps are too high.  First any ideas what is causing the hi temps?  Second, what fan upgrades are available.

You may need to remove the heat sink from the CPU, clean both surfaces, apply a thin coat of fresh thermal paste (eg Arctic Silver) and then re-install the heat sink.

Other possibility is the heat sink failed, but I'd try new thermal paste first.
