Targeted Read and Smart Short Self Tests Failed

Hi,

My new XPS 2710 desktop has just produced failed messages for targeted read test WHD20-71V and smart short self test WHD16-RCF. I switched it on for the first time on 31st December, and it's already had a new motherboard. I hope it doesn't need more new parts. It's less than 2 months old! Thanks for your advice.

I don't know that there is a PCDOCTOR code list anywhere.

The errors indicate a failed hard drive.

PC-Doctor failure codes

PC-Doctor displays an error code, problem description, and helpful tips at the completion of the test.

For example:

Error code: MC921-W No Dialtone. Make sure you have a working phone line.

Use the problem description and suggested fixes to help in resolving the problem.

PCs have SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) capable hard drives. SMART is firmware that resides on the hard drive and continuously monitors drive parameters such as performance and error rates. SMART uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent.

Common SMART errors are:

Hard disk failure is imminent.

A hard drive in the system reports that it may fail.

The use of SMART does not prevent all hard drive failures, but it can give you the opportunity to back up your personal files and replace the hard drive before it fails.

Saving files before replacing a hard drive

Before replacing the hard drive, create a set of recovery disks, and then back up your personal files to an external storage device, such as a USB drive, recordable discs, floppy disks, or another hard drive. After installing a new hard drive and performing a system recovery, the new hard drive will only have the operating system loaded. Personal files can be restored to the new hard drive after completing a system recovery.

What does PC-Doctor error code "nnn" mean?

General data recovery methods:

*IMPORTANT* - If there is any question that the drive is at fault - it's
making noises for instance - and the data is crucial DO NOTHING FURTHER
ON THE DRIVE. Every time you spin that drive up you may be destroying
data. If this is the case, send the drive to a professional data
recovery company like Drive Savers (my preference) or Seagate Data
Recovery. General prices run from $500USD on up. Drive Savers recovered
all the data on a failed laptop drive for one of my clients and it cost
$2,700. He thought it was worth the money; only you know what your data
is worth. I understand that some insurance companies are now covering
data recovery charges so check with yours.

Also, note that when the error is INDETERMINATE, we need to restart the system and try the test again as this doesn’t mean a failure of the hardware part.

TESTING IN PROGRESS	21	Internal PC-Doctor Code. If a test ends with this result, contact support.
INTERNAL ERROR	22	Internal PC-Doctor Error. Contact Support
FAIL	23	A hardware defect was detected. If you believe the hardware to be good, contact support.
USER ABORTED	24	Testing was aborted by the user.
DEVICE BUSY	25	Testing could not begin because the device is locked by the hardware or operating system.
INSUFFICIENT PRIVILEGE	26	Testing could not begin because the user does not have sufficient privileges. Try running as an administrator.
NOT SUPPORTED	27	Device does not support a functionality that this test required to run. Usually a driver issue.
CANNOT RUN	28	Device supports this test but cannot run for unknown reasons. Usually a driver issue.
BAD PARAMS	29	Bad parameters were passed to the module from the client or settings file.
NO MEDIA	30	Required media to run test was not found in the device.
NO DEVICE	31	This device was not detected on the system. It may have been removed (which can happen with hot-swappable devices).
NO TEST	32	This test is no longer detected on the system. Contact support.
NO MODULE	33	This module is no longer detected on the system. Contact support.
EXEC FAILED	34	The execution of the module failed. Contact support.
MODULE FAILED TO START	35	Internal PC-Doctor error. Contact support.
DUPLICATE GUID	36	Internal PC-Doctor error. Contact support.
MAX TIME EXCEEDED	37	The test was cancelled because the maximum amount of time for testing was exceeded.
EXITED ABNORMALLY	38	Internal PC-Doctor error. Contact support.
INCORRECT MEDIA	39	Media present in the device was incorrect.
NO CABLE	40	No network cable was detected.
NO CONNECTION	41	Network adapter is not connected.
NO INDICATOR	42	Internal PC-Doctor error. Contact support.
DEVICE NOT TESTABLE	43	The device is not testable because of an incorrect driver or other configuration problem.
DEVICE DISABLED	44	The device is disabled by the user or operating system.
MISCONFIGURED	45	The configuration of this device does not allow testing.
DEVICE TESTING BLOCKED	46	Another hardware test is currently using this device.
NODIALTONE	47	The dialtone test cannot detect a dialtone from the modem.
NOTAPPLICABLE	48	The test is not applicable for the hardware.
NO SIGNAL	49	No signal was detected.
LOW SIGNAL STRENGTH	50	The signal strength is too low.
WARNING	51	The test produced important warnings.
INDETERMINATE	52	The test could not determine a FAIL or PASS result. Close all applications or reboot computer and try again.
SKIPPED	53	The test was skipped.
COMPLETED	55	Used for tests where returning PASS or FAIL is not appropriate (such as Bluetooth test).
TESTINGHALTED	56	Script halted due to HALTON being set.
DEVICE ABORTED	57	Testing was aborted by the device.
TIMED OUT	58	Testing was stopped because the test was taking too long.
