Windows 7 System Image backup
Hello,
I have a DELL Dell Studio XPS 8100 Desktop. Recently it would not boot, recovery on the hard drive, recovery disc, and repair disc all would not allow get any further than the BLUE Screen with the Bird and Twig picture. I took it into the Geek Squad and they were able to run a utility to correct a disc sector issue and the computer now seems to function, but I have a couple of issues.
1. I am unable to complete a backup if I select the option Include a system image of the drives: RECOVERY, OS (C:)
2. I am also unable to create one using the Create a system image
They both fail with I/O errors.
A normal data backup of the User files works fine.

Hi Mike,
This problem is caused by an issue with the Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility when using drives with 4K Logical sector sizes, which are found on WD 2.5 TB and larger external drives. This is different from “Advanced Format” (AFD) drives which use 4K physical sector sizes. AFD drives should not cause this problem
It is still possible to use a 2.5 TB drive or larger with Windows 7 Backup and Restore, as long as you don't need to use the drive with Windows XP. Using the WD Quick Formatter tool, select the Factory Default configuration to reformat the drive.
Warning: This tool will erase all data on your drive, so take the necessary precautions.
If the above steps do not work, You may also reinstall USB controllers and check if the issue persists.
To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:

Hi Rajesh,
The Primary Drive is WD, but the drive I am going to is a Seagate 3TB
external drive, but I think your theory is correct. I have an internal
Seagate 1TB drive and the backup appears to be working writing to that
device. It has not completed yet, but it is getting much further.
Thanks for the help.
Mike

Hi Rajesh,
Sorry I need more help. It does appear that Windows 7 formatting will allow me to set anything other than 4K. I have not found anything that Seagate provides that allows me format to 512.
I have provided FSUTIL info for K and F drives. F drive works and K drive fails for System Image Backups.

Hi Mike,
I would suggest you to use any drive which is of 1TB to isolate the hard drive.
