XPS 630 RAM Question*****

I just ordered a XPS 630 with Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.40GHz,1066FSB) and 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs.

I know that this is a bit old to be saying just ordered but yes, its true. I was wondering if i could replace the 667Mhz with 800mhz ram? i wasnt sure if the motherboard could support the 800mhz or not?

i would include what my motherboard is, but it wasnt listed and i havent received the computer yet. Thank you for your time.

From the User manual specs

Memory module connector

four user-accessible DDR2 sockets

Memory module capacities

128, 256, 512 MB, 1 GB, or 2 GB non-ECC

Memory type

800 and 667-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM; SLI memory

Minimum memory

1 GB

Maximum memory

8 GB

The system will also support 1066 mhz ram as the FSB is either 1066 or 1333mhz

Order 1 gig of RAM then throw it in garbage when PC arrives and order higher grade RAM from Newegg for 1/3 the price that DELL charges.  You can get 4 gigs of performance gaming RAM from Newegg at 1066 speeds for around 100.00 to 130.00 U.S. versus the 400.00 that DELL charges.

You can physcially install different speeds of memory (as long as the speeds are each recognized by the motherboard) but all the memory will run at the slower speed of the two.

The way memory is named is confusing.  For example, PC2-6400 memory is the same as DDR2-800 memory.

The first designation is the module name, the second is the standard name.  For example, DDR2-800 is the data transfer rate applicable to the raw chip in the memory.  PC2-6400 is the theoretical bandwidth of the DIMM module itself.

Most sellers will list both names, so just look for the one with which you are comfortable.
