XPS 710 just upgraded to 8GB PC2-6400 CL4 memory

I just got my new ram today. They are A-DATA Extreme Edition Vitesta DDR2 800+ Series PC2-6400 CL4. I got 2 sets of 4GB for a total of 8GB. They have Cas Latency Timings of 4-4-4-12 with 2.0volts with EEP enabled. Vista 32 can see all 8GB but the system only uses 3.5GB. You can find these on newegg search for "A-DATA Vitesta 4GB". They are going for $69.99 a set. They work for my XPS 710. Plus the red heatspreaders go great with my red motherboard.

So I take it that you are planning on upgrading to Vista 64bit right? Otherwise you wasted your money on that extra 4gigs.

I was told it would be a waste of money to buy DDR2-800 for the XPS 710 because I wouldn't notice any performance increase over the DDR2-667. So...will I, or will I not?

You may or may not see that much of a difference between the 667 and 800MHZ. My main point was that if your running a 32 bit OS you going to be able use at most 3.5gigs of the 8gigs you bought. You need to be running on a 64bit OS to use more than 4gigs.

PC2-6400 is much better then PC2-5300. Yes you will see a performance increase. Even going from 2GB of PC2-5300 to 4GB PC2-5300 on a 32bit OS you will see a speed increase.

I ran a Crysis TimeDemo benchmark today and I get average 55 FPS on very high quality with AA on at x16.

My system now can play Crysis the way it was ment to be played.

And yes I am updating Vista 64bit as I type.

Best memory buy ever! Thank you A-Data.

Remember the ram not used in 32bit OS goes to video memory so it is not a wast for gamers.

Disagree its the Dell card, crummy dell/creative drivers. If it was just the mb there would not be issues with other systems.

Still get the X-Fi Screech of Death running 64bit Vista. It has to be the BTX Motherboard. The only things that are still a dell product is the case, the BTX motherboard and the PSU and the CPU. Maybe with a new case and a new motherboard I could have a great 64bit system. The X-Fi issue is a sad one. But its not the sound card its the motherboard.

I replaced my Dell OEM X-Fi XtremeMusic for a retail X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series card. Are you saying that all X-Fi cards are defective? Its a Dell issue.

Yes but not a much as the Dell cards. Read the Creative forums. Read about the issues with the 420,630,730. All suffer the same fate. Some are lucky and the latest drivers from creative have solved thier issue. I am not saying that the board might be part of the problem but the issue is on multiple systems which to me puts the board as a very small factor.

I have the X-Fi Fatal1ty XtremeGamer Professional and I had a slight issue with garbled sound this evening while playing COD4 but other than that, I've never had any issues with it.

Wow, Vista 32-bit is actually showing all 8gb of ram!!  Tell me, have you noticed any performance increase switching from the DDR2-667 to the DDR2-800?

That's totally normal. Vista will show how many gigs of ram are installed, you just can't use them.

Try "Dxdiag" from the system folder...

it'll show actually ram amount that you're addressed...

x64's the only way you can fully use all of them
