XPS 720 Update?

Hi All the XPS 420 I had went back, looking to buy a 630/720 but both seem to have outdated chipsets unlike the 420 that had an X38 chipset with 45nm support and the lot!

The release of 45nm and 9800gx2 makes me think an update is close. Anyone know when the 720 will be re released? as the current chipset is very old and I think it is a bad time to buy

Yea I'd wait a month or two and get the 730 when it comes out even though IMO, the case doesn't look as good as thhe 700/710/720 case.  If you really want to buy now, I'd suggest getting a 720 out of the Outlet so that you aren't paying full price for one.  They have a lot of good deals in the Outlet.  Even though the chipset is now now longer the top chipset nvidia makes, the 720 is still quite a performer.

The 720 with the A05 BIOS will support the Wolfdale E-series processors I believe.  The Quads aren't supported yet anyway.  Not really sure if Dell will come out with another BIOS for it to support the Quads.  The 730 should support all the 45nm CPUs though.

Hmm, well if the current ones dont have 45nm support then Dell are gonna lose out arent they?

   RRF,

You are correct, A05 gives wolfdale support. I will try a quad as soon as they are out. Although the E8400 works fine for me

Can anyone tell me if the 750 Watt power supply is okay to SLI two 8800 GTX? If so, then do I need to hook up two power plugs to each 8800? If so, then why the heck did Dell put a PS in there with but two Video Card plugs? How do they SLI the pair with but two plugs and two conventional plugs? Thanks for any assistance guys! I appreciate it.

I have several of them. The only thing is the 750 Watt has two 6 pin video card connectors and but two of the 4 pin connectors. So If I take and hook the two 6 pins to one card and use a y connector going to the other two 4 pin connectors, where am I to hook up anothe y connector to? So I have a total of 4 - 6 pin connectors. I know it is done because I see Dual 8800GTX 720's with 750 Watt Black cases in the outlet columns. They are made but I wonder how the dual cards are set up. In the manual it shows but one plug to each card. You would think Dell would have some better instructions out there than something showing how to hook up 2 6800's in SLI (that is what the diagram looks like). :smileymad:

You will need to get some 4-pin to 6-pin converters to use them with the video cards if you want to have SLI with the 750w.  Search around the forums and you'll find what's needed.
