XPS 9000 and XPS 8000 delivery delay issues

The previous thread that mentioned issues of the Studio XPS 9000 and XPS 8000 being delayed or having extensive build times was locked. After a months time I had ordered mine (9/26) and it was supposed to ship on (10/22), after two delays it finally shipped out and will be received today (10/28). If you have any issues or have found any solutions to help get your systems sooner please help others that have also been in this predicament. It would seem the main issue is due to the high demand of I5 and I7 processors and parts being backordered. If you call customer service after a delay often times they will upgrade you to one day shipping, even though it took them three days to actually get it out.

Since my XPS8000 was ordered to replace an older and still working computer, my purchase isn't tied to Christmas so waiting a few weeks if needed is not a big deal to me.  Actually I expected that would be the case due to ordering around the holidays.  Then I found this forum and see that it's like being in a very slow take-a-number-and-wait line.  I had no idea all this was going on.

When I placed the order on 12/11 to take advantage of the advertised discount, the order details showed EDD of 1/6/10.  No big deal, I thought.   I see all your posts about your delivery dates moving further and further out.  Mine now just says:  EDD - NA

NA???  Good thing my old 2004 model XPS is still running well...  looks like I'll be waiting for quite some time.  Good luck in getting your new machines everyone.  I hope they arrive soon and in time for Christmas!

I orderwed an XPS 8000 thru the Dell website on 12-01-09 with a delivery date of 12-18-09. This was a Christmas present for my daughter. On 12-15-09, I received an "order delayed" email with an estimated delivery date of 12-29-09. Watching to see what happens next. I see by other posts that orders submmitted both before and after my order date have shipped and I ordered pretty much the vanilla configuration except that I upgraded the monitor.

This is what the order delay email said:

We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with one or more items in your order.

Based on the latest available information, we have adjusted the estimated delivery date
and are confident your order will be delivered on or before this new date.
(see Revised Estimated Delivery Date below)

We apologize for the delay and appreciate your patience.

NOTE: DELL NOTIFIED ME THAT MY ORIGINAL POST OF LAST NIGHT WAS DELETED BECAUSE OF LANGUAGE THEY DEEMED "UNLAWFUL, HARRASSING OR OTHERWISE OBJECTIONABLE". I HAVE BELOW ELIMINATED ANY WORDS THAT WOULD BE PERHAPS OFFENSIVE TO OTHERS. OR PERHAPS ITS THE REALITY THAT'S OFFENSIVE TO DELL.

have the story from XXXX. XPS 8000 ordered 10/22, delayed twice and finally delivered 11/18. I immediately found that it had only 1/2 (500GB) of the dual 500GB performance drives showing. A call to tech support netted me a XXXX who insisted I had to buy accidental insurance before she could forward me. Finally told her it was worth $70 to get her off the phone and to the right person- wrong. Tech 2 "could not help". The next day sales did delete this ridiculous insurance charge, listened to my complaint that the person selling it should be retrained or fired, and connected me with  senior tech support. I then actually tolerated being on the phone for 6 hours as we took the machine down to 0 (I am NOT qualified to do this), reconfigured the hard drives, reinstalled windows and started reinstalling software- about 1/2 of which worked properly. I notfied them the next day I would never trust this machine and had not signed on for this. A replacement was authorized and ordered.... and there the story waits with multiple calls on status, the same canned lines, some polite prevarication and no computer. It is still "in production" although now "expedited- which means nothing. I actually received a bill for the defective computer and sales supposedly took care of that. I will give this delivery to the 30th and if its not here, cancel and have a builder do a custom machine for me. Even more infuriating have been the customer service calls to survey my joyful demeanor with the new computer. And the defective computer still sits in a (very large) box, taking up space and waiting for a return label. Hours and hours on the telephone and professional time lost-2 months.

vashonchris,

I wouldn't go to Las Vegas anytime soon. It sounds like you had a horrible experience and you have every reason to be angry.  I cant think of a worse time to have to get a replacement computer since they are having so many other issues with parts.  I think your order should go right to the front of the que if they sent you one that was having problems.

Hang in there and good luck on your replacement.

Note:  I THINK YOUR CAPS LOCK GETS STUCK ON FROM TIME TO TIME.  IT ALMOST SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE YELLING.

IMHO, that may have something to do with your 1st post ever, getting deleted.

I ordered my computer, a printer, and some ink on 12/7/09 and received an EDD of 12/30/09 for the computer. I have already received the printer and the ink. I contacted Dell today after reading this forum and they said that as of right now there are no delays on my order (knock on wood).  I actually spoke with someone who was slightly helpful and I could understand. He told me that the computer isnt even made in the USA, but that it is supposed to be shipped out from where it is being made on Monday, December 21, 2009 and should be shipped to me by December 23, 2009. He also told me that I can call them back on Monday to verify that it has shipped to the US. I am hoping that everything goes according to schedule because I really need this new computer. I am a web developer and the computer I am working on now is a dinosaur and so slow it isnt even funny. I am running on Windows XP with 1GB RAM (maxed out), 150 GB hard drive, and an AMD Athlom(tm) 64 Processor.  My other computer is better but it is linux so I am unable to run the programs I need to develop web sites (asp, Visual Studio, dreamweaver, etc.). I will post to let everyone know the status.  I even told the guy that I would cancel my order if it is delayed so we will see what happens. I wish everyone who is having issues the best of luck and hope all of the systems come soon.

[quote user="richard_fr"]

To recap, I ordered my XPS 9000 on 11/27, was given an EDD of 12/16 and then last week that slipped to January 12th.  Nothing special about my config.

I run the IT department at a medium sized company and all of our desktop machines are Dells, and we buy a lot of software through them too.  We're not a big account for Dell, but we're big enough that I have a Dell sales rep who knows us and knows who I am.  So I called him last week to see if he could do anything about the order for my 9000.  Consumer and commercial sales are completely different organizations at Dell, so he said probably not, but he'd try.

I got an email from him this morning saying that my machine was 2-3 days away from shipping.  My order status page still shows an EDD of 1/12, but I'd guess he has access to better information than I do.   So it might just be coincidence that I'll be getting it soon, or he might have been able to move me to the front of the line somehow, or he might be wrong and I won't see the machine until the middle of January.  I hope he's right, but I won't believe it until I have a tracking number.

My sales rep was right.  Fedex picked up my order yesterday and I should have it by 12/22, only 6 days later than the original EDD.  I don't think he had any success getting my order expedited.    I think it was held up for lack of a part, like the i7-920, and when it came in they built the box.  Hopefully this mean other peoples orders are getting filled now too.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Dell is making one final attempt to screw this up.  The order made it to my local Fedex depot, where it showed up with a delivery exception of "incorrect address", so I called Fedex to ask what was wrong with the address.  I had the order shipped to my office so that I wouldn't have to worry about someone being home to sign for it.  Dell put my name, the business name, the city state and zip code on it, but not the street address.  They said I should have Dell call them with the street address.

When I called Dell, the customer service droid told me that the address can't be changed.  See couldn't see that I did not want it changed, I wanted it completed so that Fedex could make the delivery, using the address that was already on the order.  I asked  to speak with a supervisor.  She told me that wasn't possible.  I insisted.  Finally she transfered me to a manager who understood the problem and told me that he would have it corrected, and that someone would call me back within 24 hours.  The whole sorry incident took about an hour on the phone including hold time.

Idiots.

My only ray of hope is that the Fedex CSR told me that they'd probably just ask the driver if he knew where the business was located, which he does, and they'd deliver it on Monday.  They actually did deliver the monitor, just not the CPU.

I asked  to speak with a supervisor.  She told me that wasn't possible.  I insisted.

I had to do the same.

I wasn't getting anywhere with the L1 CSR, so I asked "Is there a supervisor I can speak to?"  She responded with "Sir, I'm sure I'm giving you the correct information."

A simple but firm, "That wasn't the question I asked. Is there a supervisor I can speak to?" got me transferred to one.

All told, it was close to a couple of hours on hold though.

It's really frustrating to see orders being placed after mine being delivered  ..

Order date 11/24

First EDD: 12/14

Last EDD: 1/5

Ordered through Dell EPP

XPS 8000 I5, 1TB, 8GB, GTX 260 1792, 24" monitor

December 19th, 2009 20:00

I checked  Best Buy and they have XPS8000 available online and will deliver before Christmas. Maybe that's why all custom orders are taking a long time because all of the XPS are going to Best Buy.

Just an FYI.  My 8000 is now in delivery prep.  Ordered 11/13.

Order date: 11/12/2009 of an XPS Studio 9000

Original EDD: 12/02/2009

EDD Changes: 12/09/2009, 12/16/2009, 12/23/2009

I have never received an email notifying me of Delivery Delays.  I found out yesterday that Dell thinks they talked to someone at my home # on 11/30/2009.  This person supposedly gave Dell permission to delay the order until 12/23/2009.  This did not occur and Dell was unable to give me the call time of day or person to whom they spoke.  This also doesn't explain why online I saw intermediate EDD changes of 12/09 and 12/16 (I didn't think to print screen each EDD change).

I have been patient and civil but persistent in all phone conversations.  However, I was disappointed last week when a manager promised to call back but then ended our conversation by hanging up on me.  I guess he was too embarrassed to call back.

Conversations Friday and yesterday have been better.  Both Dell employees have said there are no part delays and that a ship date of 12/21/2009 'looks good".  It took getting to a manager yesterday but they said they would upgrade my delivery to Next Day for free but the Order Status still shows 2nd Business Day.

Fortunately, I am not in dire need of a new computer.  If the EDD changes again I'll be cancelling my order and shopping around.  HP has a machine (e9280t) with more horsepower, more memory and is less expensive.

Here is an update on my order.

11/24/09 - Ordered XPS 8000 through the Dell website. Received email giving estimated shipping date of 12/9/09 and estimated delivery date of 12/15/09.

12/10/09 - Received an email giving a revised estimated delivery date of 12/22/09.

12/17/09 - Received an email with a revised estimated delivery date of 12/31/09.

Today I received an email that gives the status as shipped with a shipped date of 12/19/09, an estimated delivery date of 12/29/09 and a FEDEX tracking number (which does not yet register in the Fedex system).

December 20th, 2009 07:00

i cancelled my order last week, despite having a EDD on 21 Dec 09. I still glad that i made tat choice, cos it might be shifted again. Am reading the post with a new pc which i got from newgg equivalent. (am from singapore). The whole system cost 10% more than what i have paid for xp9000. but the specs was much better, i950, ati 5850. 6 G 1600 ram, coolermaster chasis, however, i still got my monitor from dell (cos they still produce a better monitor; incidentally, i received my dell monitor 5 days after placing my order). Just sharing that, it may seemed daunting to build your own system (some shops do offer service to assemble the pc for u; just need to give them the parts that you need), but in my case, i am getting a much better system for the given price, faster and less fustration.

Orginal order date: 11/29

Original delivery: 12/16

First delay email: 1/5

Today, 12/20, I get an email that it has shipped and the delivery will be 12/23.

So either the mass cancellations moved my production up or Dell got their stuff together. Probably the former.

My system was an XPS 8000 i7

I never called customer service based on the horror stories here. I figured that would just make me more mad. I did send one email that was never returned except for an auto generated one saying someone would reply in 24 hours, yeah right.

So at least my son will get the monitor from my new system for Christmas it seems. Still, this whole process has disgusted me to Dell. I have told friends and family for years to go Dell. No more. Dell is a different company than it used to be. This is Dell number 4 for me and probably my last. I know I'm a small fish but it seems like there are a lot of disgruntled customers and Dell has lost a whole cycle of buyers on the next go around.

Good luck to the rest of you.

This is the first time I have experienced such long delays for an ordered item from DELL.  I ordered an XPS 8000 for my wife, not as a Christmas present, but just because it was time to upgrade.  The original EDD was 9 Dec.  However, DELL added a couple of "promotional" items that I found were actually added to the cost of the machine, not included in the price.  I had a couple of go-rounds on this issue, and had one of the items removed, but they already shipped the useless "transfer cable."  I got a new EDD of 23 Dec., which I suspected was due to my complaints with the promotional items possibly delaying things (although I told them if it would delay shipment to not bother changing anything).  I see that many folks have delays, however, so I suppose my delay was not due to that.  So I thought, well, it will be a Christmas present, then.  But a couple of days ago I got a cancellation/action required warning with a new EDD of 4 Jan.  I went ahead and renewed the order, but I see that some people who ordered after me have gotten shipping notices.  Maybe my post here will speed things up?  Here's hoping.
