Thanks for using Dell | Talk. I apologize for the confusion. A firewire card is independent of USB. You can add any standard PCI firewire card (purchased locally).
thanks Chris...i've never installed a card before...will this also include a cord?? I guess i'm fuzzy on how i'm going to connect the camera to the pc??

Most likely will not come with a cord. You would have too purchase one from the local store. I would bring the camera to the store and make sure the camera, cable, and the PCI firewire card connect.
this is what I am looking for !!! the firewire port...is there one on my 4400??? is it the same as the usb port?? the cord attaches fine to the camera (in the dv port) but the cord doesn't fit into a port in my computer! the cord is a 6pin to a 4pin cable..

Click Here * On the narrow gray bar, click [Support]
* Be sure your system service tag is the one listed on the left. If not,
- enter your service tag or Choose Dimension 4400
* This is your "Home" page
* On the left, click Documentation
* Click Adding Parts or Tech Notes, look for "opening the computer cover" or "Removing and Replacing Parts"
Chris, thanks again for helping...the only thing i don't understand is if the cord doesn't have a "hole" to plug into the computer right now, how will installing a card INSIDE the computer fix this problem?? I know the firewire connects to the camera...my question is how will the firewire then connect into the COMPUTER??? l've never installed a card...does this change the back of the computer so a cable will fit somewhere?? i assumed it was just something (the card) that went into the computer and did stuff internally....

The original poster had the same question I now have, but unfortunately it was never answered. He was told where to go to learn how to install the firewire card, but was never given any information about a firewire port. In my infinite computer ignorance, I am as confused as he. After you install the card, how do you physically plug the firewire cable (in my case, an i.Link cable) into the computer? The 4400 has 4 USB ports, but no ports that seem to fit the i.Link cable. I think I may need something called a DV port, but wouldn't know one if it hit me in the head. DO I need such a port? If so, can it be installed in my 4400? If so, how do I do it? Again, I not talking about the card.
you would need a firewire card to connect the camera to the computer basically
you would fit the firewire in a pci slot which is in the back of your computer where your modem/soundcard is installed then from there u will have a open port on the newly installed card & the firewire cable would fit into that u cannot use firewire with usb if thats what your thinking :) if your unsure about anything the best thing is to ask your local outlet of computers or digital/camcorders

Here is a picture of you internal motherboard, See the 1,2,3,4, PCI slots? Your firewire card will go in one of these.
