new monitor U2715H, old system XPS 420

Hi all - thanks for any help with this:

just bought a new dell monitor U2715H in hopes of adding a second screen to my current system (pretty old XPS 420) Monitor out is DP,  video card in is DVI x2 - old monitor has the first DVI slot - got a DP and to DVI cable and hooked it up, but new monitor not detected anywhere - driver updates of the video card are crashing.

Dell support is not helping despite much trying. do I need a new video card (Radeon HD1600XT) or am I missing something? I realize I'm due for a whole new system but am in the middle of a deadline for a project

thanks for any help!

A video card DVI out port cannot up convert to monitor DP/mDP in ports via a straight cable. What you bought is designed to down convert a video card DP/mDP signal to a monitor DVI port. You have to purchase an active converter.
Video card DVI out --> DVI to mDP converter --> Dell mDP to DP cable --> U2715H DP in

Or get a DVI to HDMI cable.
Video card DVI out --> DVI to HDMI cable --> U2715H HDMI in

HDMI and DVI are the same video signal, no no converter is needed.
