upgrade GX620 processor

It isn't offered on the Dell site as an upgrade option, but does anyone know if I can upgrade my Pentium D 830 to a D 930?  I want to take advantage of the VT technology of the 930 chip.

920 works in GX620, so i would expect the 930 to work
 
just upgrade the BIOS before you drop in the new chip

Will just about any Pentium D chips work in the 620? Does the 2-2mb and 2-1mb make a difference? Also is there somewhere I can find a list of known processors that work in this motherboard. I am looking on Newegg for a new processor and I am thinking about Intel Pentium D 925 Presler 3.0GHz and the Intel Pentium D 935 Presler 3.2GHz chips.

I don't know about just any Pentium D.  I did contact Dell chat support and did have them confirm that it can run a 930 processor.  From my log:
 
Dell: "_____, we in Dell do not recommend upgrading the processor.As this can lead to many hardware configuration changes on the system and the system may not perform as it should do."

 Me: "Ok, whether recomended or not, Can the GX620 motherboard run with a Pentium D 930 CPU? I believe I have seen them advertised with that chip as an option."

Dell: "_____, as I see from the records that the system you are using can run with a Pentium D 930 processor."

Since I am interested in the VT technology of the Intel chip I was only interested in those ending in "0" since the 800 series and the 900 (ending in 5) don't.  http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-022102.htm.

Sorry, but the GX620 doesn't supports the VT technology.
 
From the Intel site: the chipset 945G supports the VT technology
if the southbridge is the ICH7-DH (82801GDH) I/O controller hub
(aka southbridge), but the GX620 uses the ICH7 (82801GB).

Are you sure that your CPU is D950? Please confirm. I am thinking of upgrading my GX620MT to higher CPU such as D945 or D950 or D960, but still confusing about VT capabilty on that motherboard.

I can tell you for a FACT that both the presler chips and the Pentium D950 work in a Optiplex GX620 as I own two Optiplex USFF setups, and one has a 2.8ghz presler, and the othe has a Pentium D950, 3.4Ghz dualcore, and these are the exact chips they came with when I bought them from Dell.  My P950 USFF case with 220watt external power supply works fine with a 250GB SATA2 HDD and the 130 Watt peak-power processor----been running strong for almost a year 24x7.and I use it to do tons of digitizing and number crunching.
 
the BIGger QUESTION:
Now what I'd love is if the GX620 could run the conroe chips like the 2.4GHZ and 2.66 mhz conroes "Core Duo" chips.   Does anyone know if that chip is compatible even with the newest bios A11? 
 
Anyone?

The chipset supports it, but the BIOS and the VRM (voltage regulator module) doesn't.
 
It can fry a Intel Core 2 because it uses lower voltages.

That is good to know that those D 950 and D960 Duol Core CPU worked fine on OptiPlex 620. I had a GX620 Mini desktop which currently have P4 3.4GHz HT, and thinking of upgrading it to Duo Core D945 (no VT Tech), but based on what you said with your OptiPlex 620, I guess I might go for D960 3.6GHz with VT Tech ...
One more question ... Which version of motherboard do you have in that box?

Oh, BTW, any good PCI-X graphic card with 512MB I can use with my Optiplex GX620MT that makes less moise and I dont have to change Power supply?

Please don't try to install a PCI-X card in this computer....
But a PCI-e 16x may be installed... :smileyvery-happy:
 
There is not a high-end video card with 512Mb that can be installed
in your computer without replacing the power supply.
 
The best video card you can install is the 7600GT 256Mb/128-bits. Or you can try a X1650XT.
 
Also the 7900GS 256Mb/256-bits worked with some GX620/E510 computers. And the 7900GT consumes a little more power than the 7900GS.
 
The 7950GT and X1950Pro require a more powerful PSU.
 
But avoid dual-slot cards. They don't fit in the GX620MT case.

Sorry... I think I wrote wrong information...
I changed the last post to fix it...
 
The X1650XT requires more power than a 7900GT...
The X1600 may work, but its performance is comparable to a 7600GS.
 
A GeForce 7600GS 512Mb will work fine.
But it's very slower than a 7600GT 256Mb.

Yes, I agreed with you on that, but did you see another post, he said that his GX620 currently using D950 CPU, which is 3.4GHz with VT Techonoly
 
Confusing isn't it?, unless there's more than one version of motherboard in GX620 line
 
My GX620 has Pentium 4 650 HT, and like to upgrade it to Duo Core D processors: D945 (no VT, 3.4GHz 4MB cache), or D960 (VT Tech, 3.6GHz 4MB cache). I am looking for the answer on this issue, cause once I bought the CPU and it is hard to return it, esecially from Ebay.
 
BTW, Will i get  quite performance change after CPU upgrade?
Please advice. Thanks

The intel documentation says the 82801GB I/O Hub controller
(aka southbridge) doesn't support VT tech.
 
Anyway, no matter if the motherboard doesn't support it.
The CPU with VT tech should work fine (I guess).
 
Btw...
Hydralisk, please could you check if your GX620 has a 82801GB southbridge?
