Questions about Replacing XPS 8100 Motherboard

So a while ago I might have damaged my memory slots somehow when upgrading memory (see post below), now I'm thinking about replacing the

motherboard myself as it seems to be the only option.

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19425156/20015671.aspx#20015671

However, when I talked to dell representative, they gave me a quote of $250 for the motherboard, which is too expensive for me. I checked online but did not find anything matching the exact part number ( PG8TD). I did find people selling other Dell XPS8100 motherboards but with different part numbers.

Would these third party motherboards work in my circumstance? Also, if I am to do the replacement myself, is a fresh reinstall/reactivation of the windows 7 operating system required?

Thank you so much!

Hi arguer,
I have checked the details of the PG8TD part number and it is listed as motherboard service kit, Studio XPS 8100, Foxconn, for screw-type heat-sink.
The second part number is F0HMC which is listed as motherboard & heat-sink service kit, Studio XPS 8100, Foxconn, for push-pin heat-sink.
The Studio XPS 8100 was shipped with a Intel H57 chipset.
Please remember about the above mentioned specifications before you make a purchase.

Thanks Satya! Does this work though? It is sold on Amazon by Dell and it is said to be compatible with XPS 8100...

Hi arguer,

The above mentioned part number will work with the Studio XPS 8100. Please be informed mother board is considered a technician replaceable unit and may not be easy for you to install it yourself.

Windows 7 need to be re-installed or re-activated.
