Video Card Upgrade

I would like to upgrade the video card in my Dimension 4550 which presently has a Nvidia FX5700 256Mb AGP card.

I would like an ATI card that has Avivo as I need to convert video files from one file format to another and Avivo allows you to do that in hardware instead of software , which is much faster.

What is the most powerful card that I could use in my system? If necessary I would buy a more powerful power supply than the stock Dell 250w.

, and your AGP card that will fit into your system is HERE. As for the Avivo, this comes with the software.

Will this work with my Dell 250w power supply OK? I can't see the power requirements on the web page that the link goes to..

Hi, You should be ok, I only have an 250w PSU, yet I run an ATI HD 4550, and can run the ATI HD 4650.

I wouldn't recommend a 2600XT, as that GPU is two generations behind. Instead, I'd suggest a 4650 or 4670.

Ooh, that sounds really good. I thought that the power recommendations for the 4650 were much higher than the Dell's 250w supply.

I have never seen the 4650 in AGP only PCIe. An  AGP board cannot handle an PCIe card.

There are several HD 4650 cards with the AGP interface HERE.   You are probably looking at one of these cards pushing around 170 watts under load for your total system.  However, I would check with the manufacturer just to make sure they will run on a AGP 4X only board like yours.  If not, I would look at the HD 3650 cards like HERE.   The HD 3850 while better uses just too much power.   There is probably not much more than a 20 watt difference between the 4650 and 3650 with the latter using less of course.

I need a little help with this thread...I, too, have an older Dim4550 that I use as a second computer.  I am NOT a gamer but would like to upgrade the video to be compliant with Vista/W7 aero.  Reading this thread is the closest to my requirements.  I don't need two DVI outputs so the 3650 is a bit of an overkill.  What about the older X1650 Pro?  Will this work for my requirements?  Yes, I know, the GPU is older but is it good enough?  Any help would be appreciated.
