XPS 8500 and 7950?
Hi all, I was just wondering if a 7950 would work in my XPS 8500 without a PSU upgrade? I know it will fit in lengthwise but also it says on the Dell website that it has '225w of pure graphics horsepower' but wanted to check? Thanks in advance by the way :)

This only means that the video card can take up to 225 watts as 75 watts is provided by the motherboard and another 75 watts each on the two 6-pin power cables that you attach to the card. 75 x 3 = 225 just like any other card. This does not mean the card will actually draw this much power though, but it does draw over 150 watts which is why you need the 2nd 6-pin power cable. You could call the HD 7870 the same thing if you wanted. I guess you could even call a video card that only has one 6-pin connector 150w of pure graphics horsepower if you want to make that kind of advertising.
Anyway, the HD 7950 is probably pushing it on your stock power supply. However, a retail HD 7870 has a good shot at working since others have done so as long as it's not an extremely overclocked card. When pushed, there can be a 25-30 watt difference between the two cards. I am not familiar with the Club brand over in the UK. The most popular brands here are Sapphire, XFX, MSI, HIS, ASUS & Gigabyte. My personal choice is Sapphire.

I was looking at the 7870 as an alternative but even the OEM edition states it needs a 500w PSU yet Dell still supplys their XPS 8500s with 460w PSUs? Also, how come it says 225w of pure graphics horsepower ant the 7950 only uses 180w in benchmarks? Thanks in advance

Are you referring to AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card?
XPS 8500 is shipped with power supply of 460 W. AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card requires 500W (or greater) power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended. The XPS 8500 ships with integrated graphic (Standard) option, but the user can opt to buy a separate discrete graphics card. Dell has successfully tested following video cards with XPS 8500:

Hi DELL-CHINMAY S ,
Does this mean that retail 7870 's will run as they dont use any more than 190w max TDP?
If so then im looking at is the Club 7870Xt which has a max tdp of 185w.
Any advice would be helpful.

I appreciate your concern.
There are two versions of a graphic cards: Retail version (available on manufacturer and third party websites) and the OEM version (Specifically designed as per the requirements of OEM). All three cards in question (OEM version of 7870, Club 7870XT and Club 7870 XT Joker card) have a TDP less than 210W but Club 7870XT and Club 7870 XT Joker card require a minimum of 500W power supply to work. Both the cards have not been tested by Dell with a 460W power supply. However, you may refer to previous thread. Many users were able to upgrade XPS 8500 with a 7870 graphic card while retaining the 460W power supply.

Thanks kelbear. I have just purchased a 660 ti as its just come on offer for slightly cheaper than a 7870 from Pixmania. This says it will work on a 450w psu, so i will be fine. Thanks fr the help btw.
