I heard about the fsb bieng capped at 800mhz and wondered also if i could buy a dell optiplex board that supports intel core 2 or if their is any way to flash the BIOS to allow this

no and it wont support the 960 without the Copper heatsink.
You cant get blood out of a stone. This is an old system with DDR2 and only room for single slot wide video card.

The GX620 doesn't support any Core processors. The chipset theoretically could do some of the low end ones, but the bios has to recognize the processor and then more or less let the motherboard adjust the voltage provided to the processor.
The best you can get is a Pentium D I believe. The first Optiplex with Core support was the 745 if memory serves.

ok thanks, i saw a pentium d 960 which was rated at 3.6ghz. how does this compare to the newer core processors as the clock speed is rated higher but it is dual core at only 800mhz fsb

According to this page.....
You can go up to a pentium D 840 or a pentium 4 670.
hope this helps.

The GX620 MT does support Core 2 Duo 6300. I am running that setup right now. Bios A11 is enough to support. Originally, a Pentium D 960 3.60 Ghz had been running in the machine.

No it cannot.
If you want Core2 Duo Get an optiplex 745 or 755 Tower.
The Optiplex 620 FAQ lists the D960 with the Copper Heatsink and Bios A11.
ALWAYS update bios BEFORE trying to change cpu.

Ok thanks. If I upgraded my optiplex gx620 to its max (according to the FAQ) then could I run oblivion? What settings?

One of the fastest Cards is the Radeon HD 6670 single slot. X1950 is slower.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 Desktop and just replaced the Pentium 4 3 GHz HT processor with a Pentium D 945 3.4 GHz. I was told this wouldn't work but It works perfect, I do believe its probably the max processor for my board though.
