MD3220 and R620 Daul path SAS physical connection

Hi,

I have a new MD3220 and two R620 servers that are running Vmware 5.1.

The servers will then be running virtual windows 2012 servers for File, exchage SQl etc

My R620s both have a single dual port 6B SAS HBA\

My MD3220 has two MD32 controllers with 1x out and 4x in ports plus NIC and other ports

I've read the basic MD3200 deployment guide and on page 14 shows how to connect two hosts to two controllers. This shows four cables from server 1 going to four SAS ports on the MD3200 and four cable from server 2 going to four ports on the MD3200.

I'm a little confused, do I need a second SAS HBA in each server to configure multipath connections to the MD3220.

Or can I just connect

Server 1 SAS Port 0 to SAS Port 0 on MD3220 Controller 1

Server 1 SAS Port 1 to SAS Port 0 on MD3220 Controller 2

Server 2 SAS Port 0 to SAS Port 1 on MD3220 Controller 1

Server 2 SAS Port 1 to SAS Port 1 on MD3220 Controller 2

Advise appricated, Thank you.

Ric

Ri_c_TL,

The cable configuration that we recommend would be to have two HBAs in each server then connecting them to each controller like it shows in the deployment guide you referenced. The reason is, it will give you HBA redundancy if the HBA card in the server were to fail. However, As long as the two hosts are configured in a cluster you shouldn't have an issue setting it up the way you referred to. You just will not have the redundancy on the controller card level in the servers.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. I would be happy to help.
