D610 Infrared

Recently picked up a D610 (has a serial port).  I have two infrared printers but am unable to get the infrared port to work.  I have enabled the port (com port 4 in the bias).  I did have an earlier Del cpi which had infrared, this unit had a monitor which sat on the task bar indicating connection and also a configuration set up in the control panel.  The D610 doesn't have this feature.  The device manager indicates the drivers are installed and working. So far I have not been able to print to anything.  (printer for HP6p printing to ir port has been set up on the laptop.

Am I missing some software or am I just getting too old to run these things?
