Dell Inspiron n5010 mouse and touchpad not working. Please help!

I just bought a Dell computer from my friend, the mouse worked until last night, now both the mouse and touchpad aren't working!

I've tried pressing the button that turns the touchpad off and on, and it did absolutely nothing.

Please help, and remember, when you offer any advice, I CANNOT use my mouse at all.

Hi alapaille,

I request you connect an external keyboard and perform the below given steps and the issue should be resolved.

Please go to mouse properties window that is Start > Control Panel > mouse. Check if the touch pad is enabled, if not enable the touchpad. In case mouse is still not responding flash BIOS and update the touchpad drivers from the links given below:

BIOS: http://dell.to/VCLAXO

Note: While flashing BIOS connect the Ac adapter and make sure the battery has minimum 15% charge as this needs uninterrupted power supply. Do not use the system till it restarts and comes up to the desktop.

Touch pad: http://dell.to/XPg1o6

In case the issue persists after driver update, I also suggest you to run diagnostics. To run diagnostics restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F12 key every two seconds. This will start the One-time boot menu. Using arrow keys select ‘Diagnostics’ and hit enter. This will run diagnostics on the hardware components of the system which may take around 5 minutes.  Next Press N for no when it asks you to continue Memory test.

Next the option listed will be: ‘Test Memory’, ‘Test System’ and Exit. Please select ‘Test System’.  Then there will be option to run ‘Express test’, ‘Extended Test’, ‘Custom Test’ and ‘Symptom Tree’. Select Custom test and click on keyboard and pointing devices and hit enter. Reply with the status of the test for further assistance.
