Vostro 1000 will not start
This Vostro 1000 does not start when the power button is pressed. Lights turn on indicating power and a fan runs for a short time, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock light come on, but nothing more happens.
If the AC adapter is connected, battery light is solid green. If no AC adapter, then no battery light is present.
What could be the problem here?

Look closely at the display screen. It almost sounds like the system is booting up but you have no display.It might be very very faint indicating the lamp or inverter is bad.
IF possible try connecting an external monitor to the computer.

Remove the battery and try with AC only. If it'll power up, the battery is faulty -replace it with a new one.
If it won't, reseat the memory moduie(s) - remove and reinstall. Still nothing? Try a new AC adapter. If you still get nothing, the mainboard is bad.

Good idea. I hadn't thought of that. Unfortunately no display on external monitor either, although the monitor did act like it received some signal on the first attempt.
