dell inspiron m5040 upgrades

is it possible to upgrade from home to pro or ultimate?
or "downgrade" to xp professional with the right drivers?
or is it stuck with windows 7 home edition?
also is it upgradeable in any way at all?
specifically hardware?

You can certainly purchase the Windows upgrade to Pro or Ultimate 7.

At this point, with less than two years to go before all support ends, XP is a dead end.

You can upgrade the RAM, hard drive without affecting the warranty;  the CPU can be upgraded but the warranty will be void.  The video chip cannot be upgraded at all.

Hi person400000,

Welcome to the community.

You can certainly install any edition of windows 7 on your laptop and install the drivers using the following link depending upon the version of windows 7 installed-

http://dell.to/sCpz1d

You can use windows 7 32 bit or windows 7 64 bit in the OS drop down provided in the above link and then install the required drivers.

However the system is not designed for windows XP so there are not drivers available for XP in Dell support website.

Regarding hardware, RAM, HDD can be upgraded and yes upgrading the processor will void the hardware contracts with Dell.

Let me know in case there any other concerns. Glad to be of assistance.
