Dell Inspiron 3880 Power Supply Upgrading

Hi, I got an Inspiron 3880 for Christmas and I was looking to upgrade the power supply because I previously had a GTX GeForce 1660 graphics card on my old computer and I wanted to transfer it to my new computer. I bought an 800 watt modular power supply by GAMEMAX, yet when I plug in the proper cords into the motherboard and CPU power supply it does not turn on. I have made sure it is not a power supply problem, and the old power supply that the Inspiron came with still works. I plugged in the 4-pin PCI-E and the 6-pin PCI-E from the new power supply into the motherboard, but the computer still doesn’t start up at all.

Chances are you did not connect the 24 pin of new psu, therefore most likely psu was not even turned on, which is a good thing. Otherwise motherboard could possibly be fried by plugging in wrong connector. Just because the GPU 6 pin connector may fit the 3880 proprietary ATX connector, doesn’t mean you should do it. GPU 6 pin can only used to connect to discrete video card.

Inspiron 3880 uses Dell proprietary 6 pin ATX power connector. You cannot plug standard 6 pin GPU power connector in it. Doing so may damage motherboard, psu, or both. You need a custom 24 to 6 pin adapter for this connector. https://dl.dell.com/topics/inspiron-3880-service-manual/images/GUID-7E141B3B-930A-467B-A3B2-B141C741C47D-low.jpg

I have similar problem, but one related question. There is a 4 pin ATX CPU port, and a 6 pin ATX SYS port on the motherboard. If I get a 24 pin to 6 pin adapter, do I use the 4 pin (my new PSU has a 12V 8(4+4) pin) from the PSU? Or do I need to find an adapter that splits from 24 pin to a 6pin and 4pin?

Found the answer in another post, can't seem to edit my reply...

Solved: Inspiron 3880 Power supply - Dell Community

To summarize, the 12V 8 pin(4+4) from my new PSU goes into the ATX CPU. And the 24 pin to 6 pin adapter goes into the ATX SYS port. And any 6 pin from the PSU will go to a new graphics card. Since the new PSU is too big, the new PSU will sit outside the case.

If you think I've read this post wrong, please correct me...

Thanks!

Hi I just wanted to share I found this on reddit.

The factory upgrade for the Inspiron 3880 is a 260 watt "bronze" model. I don't have the model number, but hopefully a helpful redditor will chime in with it. However, when searching the part number for the 200 watt PSU that came in my machine, I noticed ebay sellers selling it as an Optiplex 3060/5060/7060 PSU.

Light bulb moment: it's a shared part. Indeed, take the front bezel off and our Inspiron 3880 chassis looks almost identical to the tower version of those machines. So, I search instead for Optiplex 3060 PSUs. That leads me to the K38XP, a 360 watt model that also happens to have a 6-pin graphics card power plug. Hot diggity!

I haven't tried this yet but would be very interested to hear if any of you savvy computer folks can confirm this works.

I feel you.

I’m having the exact same issue aince I installed this proprietary Dell 360W power supply from a 3880 into my Optiplex 3060.  I’m going to drop in a 2060 Super!

And BTW, I was running the 260W Power Supply with my 1660ti!  I used a SATA to 8 pin adaptor, but there was some discoloration on the 6 pin MoBo connector from all of the power coming through those cables, but 2+ years o FB running at 144hz can do that.  Thank Goodness Nvidia made a killer 120W TDP card.

Also upgraded to an i7-8700 because people seem to dislike folks that mod Dells here.
