Intel i3-7100 (2 core) cpu may be a bit weak for gaming. Consider upgrade to i5-7400 (4 core) for 3668.

before considering gpu upgrade first upgrade psu which almost requires 24 to 6 pin adapter. see prior discussions not limited to https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron-Desktops/Inspiron-3668-upgrading-PSU-GPU/td-p/7557310

3668 proprietary 6 pinout is identical to 3060/50/40.  use same 24-to-6 pin adapter https://www.moddiy.com/products/Dell-OptiPlex-3040-3050-3060-Main-Power-24-Pin-to-6-Pin-Adapter-Cable.html

AMD gpu usually require much more power than nvidia counterparts at similar performance level. For amd card you really have to upgrade psu.

If you want to keep new psu inside 3668 case, consider SFX from coolermaster, Seasonic etc., but you may need to remove bottom hard drive cage to make space.

Thanks for this. What would be the consequences if I were to install a GTX 1050TI (for example) without upgrading the power supply? I just came across the article below where a GTX 1050TI was installed onto a similar machine to my Inspiron (3650) and it seemed to have no issues whatsoever with a 240 watt power supply and the i3 processor.

https://pcper.com/2016/11/an-upgrade-story-2-using-the-gtx-1050-ti-to-convert-an-oem-pc-to-a-gaming-pc/1/

For the kind of games I play, I don't believe they're too demanding on the CPU or for power. However the new Train Sim World game requires an i5 processor as a minimum requirement so that may warrant a CPU upgrade if I'd like to play that in the future. Would upgrading to an i5 processor require a larger power supply?

If I needed to get a power supply, which PSU's would work with the Inspiron 3668, where would I get this from and how much would this cost (in GBP)? I'd rather have one that sits inside the case rather than outside although I understand the Inspiron 3668 is indeed a very small and compact machine on the inside.

And will the successor to the GTX 1050, the GTX1650 be compatible with an Inspiron 3668?

240W is close to 260W psu estimate based on online psu calculator, i3-7100, GTX-1050ti, 16Gb ddr4, sata ssd, no odd, 22” lcd, 8 hrs a day. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator. i5-7400 brings psu estimate to 273W. I am not certain SFX psu can fit 3668 case due to bottom hdd cage. Optiplex XE2 offers 315W psu in TFX format. So I've been doing a bit more research into this and it seems as though the AMD Radeon RX560 could potentially be another suitable graphics card for my Inspiron 3668. Although it has a minimum PSU recommendation of 450W, the card only uses between 60-80w according to the AMD website, so would this also be recommended without upgrading the PSU?

Only trouble is they seem to be a bit hard to buy at the moment!
