Inspiron 3847, CPU & PCI question

Hello all ! I hope you are all in good health. I would like to stress how important this forum is. Official Dell support is bad. Dependability means nothing when you have to jump through a bunch of hoops.I simply would not have bought 3 Dell's without this forum. Now,I have a 3847 with  win 8.1,i3 4150,8 gb ram gt 740 sc 4gb vram  . I want to extend the life of this pc so it looks like I need a i7. Is the i7 4770 and the 4790k the only i7''s I can use? Also, I have the stock pci bus(I think it's pci 2).Will a pci3 video card work with my pci 2 motherboard? Also,do I have to factor in the first five digits of the cpu or will any of it's kind work? Thanks for any help!

I want to extend the life of this pc so it looks like I need a i7. Is the i7 4770 and the 4790k the only i7''s I can use?

Dell validated CPU with 5 digit part number =
M6F2X Haswell i7-4770 (3.40GHz, 86W, LGA)
RXHF8 Haswell i5-4670 (3.40GHz, 86W, 4C)
KR2TG Haswell i5-4570 (3.20GHz, 86W, 4C, LGA)
F3VXR Haswell i5-4440 (3.10GHz, 95W, L, C0)
P5FJT Haswell i3-4130 (3.40GHz, 65W, L)
5RY21 Pentium G3220 (3.10GHz, 65W)
HKGVH Pentium G1820 (2.70GHz, 65W)

4770, 4790, 4790k all have same cpuid 306C3, so they will all work. it is just Dell has only validated 4770.

Will a pci3 video card work with my pci 2 motherboard

yes pcie 3.0 video card is backward compatible w pcie 2.0 slot

do I have to factor in the first five digits of the cpu or will any of it's kind work?

any cpu of same spec will work. the five digits are just Dell DP/N

You guys and gals are awesome.Good, I just wanted to make sure about the pci express thing. I notice another user use a i7 4790k with this rig. Is only that and the i7 you listed, or can I get any haswell i7? I thought the cpu's with k after them were able to be over clocked. Is that true?

Non Dell cards will require Secure boot OFF.

More than 75W cards will require upgraded power supply like EVGA 700BR

Other than that only short cards less than 8.5 inches long work.

Full length 12 inch cards do not physically fit into the case.

if you want to upgrade to i7 for the LGA 1150 socket there are only 5 options for Haswell cpu:

4770, 4770k, 4771, 4790, 4790k.

4771 also has the same cpuid 306C3.  4770k has same cpuid too.  so all these are supported. the 3847 bios would not let you overclock the i7 although start w 4790k base freq of 4.0 is pretty good.  the extreme processors (-k) tend to be better selected in silicon binning so in general better chip.  the base tdp of these i7 are similar.  no need to get fancy heatsink if you can not overclock.

OK I read it better. So I am limited to the 3 i7 cpu's  redxps620 listed? If so that's fine, but would prefer more options of course.

Yes I was just curious about overclocking. I've been doing ok with 3 of my Dell's  cpu's, and my i3 I have now can run games that say they require an i5.I think I'll be getting an rx 570 with the i7 cpu so I guess a better power supply will be mandatory? I don't mind getting one but  I get confused when shopping for  power supplies.

You can stay in Dell and upgrade to XPS 8### stock psu 460W w 6 pin gpu power connector. RX570 recommended psu is 450W. you can use 6 to 8 pin adapter for RX570. Or you can get new EVGA 550W non modular psu w 2 yr warranty on sale now https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=100-N1-0550-L1

if you are comfortable w non modular psu then no need to spend a lot on new modular psu.

if you are not over clocking cpu then no need to buy -k cpu, used -k overclock history is also unknown.

Thank you for the link. I've never had to worry about a card that has more than the pci slot for power.Does Dell use a proprietary power supply or is it a standard atx size? I'd like to screw it in the case of course. I tried 4 different companies websites and AMD"s site and the only info I could find was (I think) the card needs an 8 pin  power connector.

This is the only time I've had to worry about power supplies for pc's. This  thread has helped me figure out what I need. Are the affordable EVGA supplies good quality? I have one of their cards and it works great. Some people online (steam forums) stress how important  a 'premium' PS  is.Any comments on the EVGA power supply that is linked? Any input is appreciated.

EVGA psu is one of the best build quality brand.  No need to go “premium” imo.

Thanks so much. I'm going to leave this as unsolved for now. I'll be back with a final question soon to finish up my build.

I'm also going to need a new cpu heatsink and fan with the i7. Will a 62 watt rated combo work well enough with the i7 or do I need to get a pricy huge heatsink and fan?

why would you do 550W when 700 is only a few dollars more and does not limit your choices for video cards.

I got the EVGA 500 watt PS. MSI recommends 450 watts and manufacturers overestimate power needed. Also I'm on Haswell so I don't think I can improve much past my rx570 and eventual i7.I've had many instances that I shouldn't  have been able to power certain graphics cards, through 2400 dimension ,537 inspiron, and this 3847.I was using a gt740 with the stock 3847 PS. I'm a rebel.
