Connect line-in device

I have an Inspiron 1545. I wish to connect a line-in audio device, either a cassette player or a phone amp.

Will these work through the mic input on the front of the laptop?

If it what other way can I use to get an Audacity recording of the tape or LP?

The Mic connection should work.  However, a mic is mono not stereo.  Newer PC's have jacks that will work for both mic and stereo line in but it doesn't look like that is available on this older model.

Audacity defaults to "Stereo Mix" which usually is not available on older models. You will have to manually change source to the Mic input to record.

Audio out from a cassette deck or a phono preamp should work but it will most likely be mono.

If you will be making regular audio CD's, save the song files as .wav (full fidelity) files (what is needed for audio CD's).  If you save as an MP3, that is something less than full fidelity.
