Dell Inspiron 7557 sometimes shuts down when I put my phone on the mousepad

I have had this issue with my Dell Inspiron 7557 ever since I bought it. Not every time, but often enough, the laptop will shut down if I put my phone around the bottom right part of the mousepad.

I have tried replicating this and have been successful a few times but haven't been able to pinpoint the exact location where it would do this. To be clear, the phone is on, probably playing youtube, VLC or facebook and I put  the phone on the laptop and it shuts down.

Any idea why this might be happening? What is under the mousepad area that could be doing this?

You're tripping the lid switch - which is usually located in the palmrest.  The magnetic field from the phone is probably doing it - so too can magnetic jewelry worn on the wrist or hand.

That makes perfect sense, since I have my laptop to shutdown on screen close. Thank you.
