Inspiron 5401 - An operating system exception was caused by system memory

Hello,

recently I started to receive an error 'An operating system exception was caused by system memory' when my laptop was woken up from a sleep state. No matter if it was on a battery or plugged in.

This error happened randomly, but the pattern would be every 24 hours once. It was on idle, no hard CPU or memory stress on the system.

Reboot to BIOS, SupportAssists diagnostics, no issues found.

Ran full diagnostics twice, no errors as well. Memtest passed too.

I've seen that some users also reported the same:

https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron/SOLVED-Inspiron-7501-An-operating-system-exception-was-caused-by/m-p/7780001

https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron/G7-17-7700-an-operating-system-exception-was-caused-by-system/m-p/7706247

It started probably after the latest BIOS update (1.5.3, released on 28.12.2020).

Following the suggestions of the community users, I've downgraded BIOS to the previous version (1.4.4) and this error is gone for two days now.

Windows is updated, the rest of the drivers are up to date too, except bios.

I have upgraded the laptop with another 8GB of Ram (Crucial, fully compatible with this configuration, checked this up before purchase).

This is my second laptop (got the first one replaced, but it had the same 8GB of ram upgrade) and I had no issues at all (the swap took place before the new BIOS came out).

Could it be a driver fault, or the BIOS incompatibility?

Any chance that Dell would review this matter and release a new BIOS having the necessary fix?

Regards

GET THE FIX, dell !!!

The first set of updates from dell seemed huge, especially for something just built.  Yes, there is a problem within dell's first set of updates, and it included a bios.

I had to finally install windows from scratch, losing lots of time.  Now, I have a new dell computer whereas I'm afraid to update from its manufacturer.

Or

Uninstalling is the best option since you can always reinstall if you need to, but here is another option that might work. Open Task Manager, Startup tab and disable Support Assist from loading at every boot. It can be run manually and doesn't need to be starting every time. It really is an unnecessary crutch for experienced users IMO.

You might need to select More details in Task Manager to see the Startup tab.

Dell Support Assist’s “memory test scan” is automatically initiated (improperly) whenever sleep mode is supposed to occur.

The setting for dell support assist is set for once a month, so that’s covered.

The settings for sleep within windows (methods: timer battery, timer a/c, lower-left power options, pressing power button when running, closing lid) have been explored to no avail & they all cause the scan action.  This “unwanted self-initiation” has also been seen when the computer has been shut down, then I hear the fans whirling and are able to catch a glimpse of the ‘support assist screen-hardware scan’.

New dell 15 7501 windows 10 home has done this since the computer’s recent purchase.  Yes, everything has been updated (several times), with a surprising 635MB or so from dell recently.

The above is a recent addition which should be added to the below previously posted about the flip-side, being the sleep problems:

All 3 methods of sleep end in shutting down and memory scan test by support assist.

  • Set to sleep via power lower left.

Problem 2min later as, trying to press keys wakeup,

Error screen, restarts itself

And this error was not sent.

Tried again & screen goes black and freezes from starting for several minutes.

  • Closing the lid (set to then sleep).

It shuts down and won’t wake up.

It will not re-start, trying twice.

Holding start for a while,

Screens come up: support assist onboard diagnosis and request to scan system to check memory (and allows itself before OK),

Then restarts automatically.

Not reported.

  • Lets cover all – sleep by time setting…

So, with both screen/sleep/battery/plug all set to 1 hour, but to test sleep on battery set to 10 min. …

Came back 17min. later to a signin screen.  Don’t know if the support assist started scanning, but that has happened in the recent past.

So, is this 3-tier sleep problem dell’s responsibility (Inspiron 15 7501) or windows 10 home?  Dell has issued a new model computer vs. Windows 10 is how old now.

Side Notes: haven’t tested shut-down timing settings…

Also, I have no idea why the settings are designated for “screen” both battery & plug, except maybe the screen powers up quicker than the computer from sleep.  Also found a mysterious “show hibernate in power settings- how’s hibernate different than sleep?

Also haven’t tested for other options for when screen-lid is closed (screen, lock, whatever).

There’s also an area for ‘power settings _____’ or configurations, whereas theres one supplied windows versions (more creatable) and a dell version, hence dell created their (probably preferred) configuration.  They both have the same choices for sleep.  Anyhow, its set to dell, because they had to have their reason to create it, yet neither solve the sleep problem.

Addendum: aha, sleep is not the problem? The problem is occurring before it sleeps- dell support assist is doing strange things.

Update : Still no ETA from Dell's Engineering on this

Now they are recommending different options until a final fix is released

1. Models which support Block Sleep in BIOS.  Can go to BIOS > Power and Turn On Block Sleep this will take away Sleep and will use Hibernation only

2.If your BIOS doesn't have Block sleep option > Set Hibernation to 20 minutes.

3. Last option is to Disable network Connected standby

Hi all, I think I found the solution!  I am using BIOS version 1.9.  I went into the BIOS settings, then under the power settings there is a toggle for whether or not you want the laptop to be automatically woken up from sleep or powered on when connected to the USB C Dock.  I shut that off and I have not had the problem anymore.  Apparently, I had the laptop connected to the USB C Dock which is connected to a power strip.  When I would completely shut off the laptop, if I turned on just the power strip this BIOS setting which was set to on would automatically power back on the laptop which was shutoff and closed by just being connected from the power strip. This would cause the laptop to stay in an on mode for numerous hours (I had no idea it was even on just because the power strip was on which has other things I need on connected to it) and was causing the laptop to overheat which then triggered the operating system memory error.  Go into the BIOS settings under power settings and turn this setting off.  There is still no excuse for Dell having this happen and also them not knowing how to fix it when people call, but this has worked for me and I hope it works for others.
