Sound problem Dell G3 15 3590 (Ubuntu 18.04)

(I can't find which location to set the post in)

Hello, for a long time now I've had problems with my sound card. The sound stopped working. When I go in Settings -> Sound in the output tab, there's only the Dummy Output displayed. As this happend 3 times before (I set the pc to it's factory state) I went checking what was displayed before the problem occurs, and it's supposed to be "sof-skl_hda_card".

I went searching everywhere on the web but all the solutions found changed nothing. Then I searched for pilots on the Dell website. The only one proposed is a .exe file. I thought it was weird but after some research I found that wine could execute these kind of files. Unfortunately when I try to errors happen.

I still have no sound (even through a headset) and this is really upsetting. I'm sure I need to install drivers.

How can I fix that ? I thought that maybe using a dual boot with windows and install the drivers would change...

I have the same problem on Inspiron 5490. The problem can reproduce when you connect external speaker by jack or Bluetooth, after disconnect external speaker notebook hasn't seen its speaker and play sound through "dummy sound".
The problem resolve temporary only be reboot system.

I have the same problem with sound card sof-skl_hda_card
But my problem even is worse. Reloading does not help, and nothing at all. Only Dell Recovery.
I have notebook Dell G3-3590 with Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
And it really blights my life in quarantine time.

If you have not tried Dell Recovery to restore the system completely. I have the same problem and it helped me. Of course, this is a bad decision. But at least some.

I created a bug report for this issue. If you can add something, feel free to add.

I have updated my Ubuntu to 20.04. Main point is it was fresh install.

It's fix all sound bags.

Similar problem on my Dell G3 15 3590 (Ubuntu 18.04). Fresh install as dual boot with Windows (so I cannot really do anything) - sound was never working - only Dummy Output

After some more research - solution from here worked for me: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1220493/18-04-audio-realtek-alc3254-fails-on-new-dell-g3-15-3590

(answer by Kevin Macute)

The solution from https://askubuntu.com/questions/1220493/18-04-audio-realtek-alc3254-fails-on-new-dell-g3-15-3590

from Kevin Macute WORKS for me.

Basically adding the following attribute: snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0 to the /etc/default/grub file and then execute:

sudo update-grub and restart.

Works like a charm on Ubuntu 18.04.4 with full udpates.

Thanks a lot! I’ve googled this advice couple of weeks ago, and it solved my problem when I edited file "grub"

The solution posted by @rodra2001 worked for me as well.

I now have a Dell Inspiron 5490 with the latest Ubuntu updates (18.04) and Sound.

Looking forward for the fingerprint reader though... I love Dell products, but my experience with Ubuntu in this machine so far.
