According to Dell specs and Crucial 8GB is the maximum. You may try 16GB but with no guarantee it will work. And you can upgrade the CPU but on a system the age of the 5720 money may be better spent on a newer faster system. This forum post has some information on a CPU upgrade.

@shAdow369

As I stated above 16GB will work just fine.

I would have to test 32GB to say for sure.

I will be leaving for the warehouse in a few hours and will see if I have a 5720 to test 32GB.

As I have stated many times in the past.

"Dell manuals are a good referance but in no way reflect the limitation of the hardware."

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-17r-5720/docs

As for the CPU:

First make sure to have BIOS updated.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=r8202&oscode=wt64a&productcode=inspiron-17r-5720

The i7-3632QM has the same TDP of 35 but has little increase in performance.

The i7-3840QM has a TDP of 45 and should work fine with a better increase in performance.

U2

Is it allowed to insert a different ram in a laptop like for example you will insert 8GB and the other one is 4GB to have 12 GB of ram in total?

Welcome to the Dell Community @shAdow369

2x8GB for a total of 16GB should work just fine.

1x8GB  +  1x4GB for a total of 12GB should also work.

The 4GB stick and the first 4GB of the 8GB stick will run in "Dual Channel/Interleave" mode.

The remaining 4GB of the 8GB stick will run in "Single Channel" mode.

This can cause a loss in system performance as the memory will be switching between Single and Dual channel.

It is best to install "Matching Pairs" for best performance.

Yes you can upgrade your CPU.

What CPU do you have installed???

Best regards,

U2

What processor/CPU do you have?

If your system supports more than 8 GB RAM, you may be able to use one 4 GB stick and one 8 GB stick. If it works, only 8 GB will run in dual-channel mode, while the remaining 4 GB would be run as single-channel.

It's more likely to work if the timings of both sticks match, though it's possible that a faster stick may be "downclocked" to match the slower stick.

Best practice is to use two identical sticks, usually bought as a pair. But, many other pairings may also work, such as heterogenous frequency, timing, size, etc., though such pairings will not perform as well as a matched pair.

Okay, Intel says that processor supports up to 32 GB RAM.

Yeah I just search the CPU and they really said that it can support 32GB of Ram, but according to the replies on this discussion Dell said that this laptop only has an 8GB of ram maximum capacity, and it also depends if more than 8GB ram will work

Unless you do a lot of editing of high-res video files or huge photo files, I don't think you'd see much performance difference between 16 GB and 32 GB. I would say that 16 GB should be your max.

Do you have a hard drive (HDD) or an SSD? If you have a hard drive, replacing it with an SSD will give you a large and noticeable performance increase. I would upgrade to an SSD before I would bother with the CPU.
