Looking for max distance for 1Gb CU and 10Gb Optical ports
What are the maximum distances supported with an X400 with 2x 10GbE optical and 2x 1GbE copper ports?
851-0099 is the product code for the R-SPR-KIT -2 SFP+ OPTIC - 10GbE ports currently configured.
What is the max distance of the 10GbE copper port option?
I cannot find this information.
Thanks,
Mike

if my old network skills are not kidding me:
Copper is allowed for 100m
MonoMode (optical fiber with 8 micrometer) are allowed up to 80km
MultiMode (optical fiber with 50+ micrometer) are allowed for up to 500m
anyway in the case of an isilon you should connect it to the next Switch which will most of the time be in range of all the above.

Jim,
You answered my questions. In the Isilon X400 Data Sheet it shows that 10GbE is supported with SFP+ or Twin-Ax copper. I appreciate the explanation of the Twin-Ax cables. We will be using SFP+ from the X400 to the Switch at my account but I found 7 different versions of SFP+ at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-gigabit_Ethernet and our data sheet doesn't explain which version the X400 uses. The SFP+ "Short Range" connector is the detail I was looking for. That describes closely the 10GBASE-SR standard defined at the above link.
Thanks,
Mike

Sluetze,
Thanks for the information and I have a follow up question. Does the Isilon product 851-099, R-SPR KIT - 2 SFP+ OPTIC - 10GbE support single mode or multimode? I suspect it is multimode but want to confirm that.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi
The X400 nodes does not have any 10G Copper ports,
The 10G port on the X400 node comes with a SFP+ Short range Connector. If you use optical cables the distance varies from the cable you use, but with OM4 cables you should have connection over aproxx 350 meters.
You can use ACTIVE twinax cables which are copper cables with an attached SPF+ connector, max lenght of those is 7-10 meters..
For the 1G ports they use RJ45 connectors, and wth the correct cable quality you can use cables of up to 95-100 Meters.
using cables this lenght would IMO not be the best way for a Isilon design, you should plan on having switches located close to the Cluster and use those for connectivity..
But the best bet is to get a Certified architect to design this solution for you..
Cheers
Jim
